I haven't dealt with a Suzuki petcock with the prime position before. Where does the vacuum line from the petcock hook up to. Some research says it hooks up to the #2 carb. I thought that fitting is just for vent hoses and doesn't pull a vacuum. Where is the proper location to tap into a vacuum port on 1979 GS1000 S ?

brass nipple on carb 3. You should have VM carbs. Number 2 carb pertains to CV carbs. Other two nipples are bowl vents. Do not block them off. Run a vacuum line from them up and over the sides of the airbox.

Ok , so when I had it running with the auxiliary tank it had a major vacuum leak? Ran pretty good considering.. Did the 1000 come with hoses attached to the overflow ports on the bottom of float bowls ? Had to pull the carbs again due to a small leak on one of the float bowls. Ordered one size larger main jets due to 4 into 1 pipe. Doesn't look like anyone is changing out the pilot jet. Really hate the wrestling match getting these in and out. A little fine tuning / carb sync and I should be able to take it out for a ride after 4 years of rebuilding Thanks again for the help

If you don't have hoses on the overflows on the bottoms of the bowls, fuel will dump right on top of your hot engine. Not ideal. Attach hoses and run off the the side behind the engine to the ground. Not sure about the 8-valve engines, but my 16 valve has a rectangular chase on the rear right of the engine case to run these hoses (and your fuel tank leak hose, and your battery acid overflow tube. and oil vapor collection tube from the air box), to the ground, but offset to the side so not dumping in front of your rear tire.

Yes, there were hoses on the overflows as Rich mentions

You should probably lift the needles 1 notch for the 4-1

Be sure to cap the vacuum port/line while syncing

VM carbs are pretty easy to remove, a bit more involved to install

Remove side covers
Remove rear master cylinder reservoir bolt and let the reservoir hang
Remove air filter box
Remove bolts holding the air plenum, the clamps carb/ plenum, the vent hose and pull the plenum back off the carbs
Loosen the carb holder clamps, the throttle cables from their clamp.
Straddle the bike, pull carbs back while swinging the backs up over the plenum boots
Wiggle carbs over the boots and out the throttle side, undo the cables
Installation is the reverse, except use a screwdriver to work the plenum boots up while sliding the carbs into the holders

RE: Overflow hoses, here's how I routed mine: I just bent those brackets out of a wire coat hanger and tried to angle them so that they wouldn't spray on the exhaust or in front of the tire. Definitely was important to do IMO - if I park on uneven ground they'll spit out a few drops of gas.
