A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Fine tuning mixture screws to fix finicky idle?

thanks all for the suggestions. Problem is 99% cured with setting the mixture screws to 3.5+ and running a super heavy dose of Berryman's and MMO. Working assumption is the idle circuit clogged enough to affect the idle, but not so much it required full disassembly. Now to find out why my GS650...

Fine tuning mixture screws to fix finicky idle?

Related question ... The connection between carb#3 and the airbox is tenuous. There are no visible gaps, but the rubber boot isn't perfectly clamped either. If air is getting in thru there would it cause a high/finicky idle or would it be irrelevant on the airbox side of the carbs? The other...

Fine tuning mixture screws to fix finicky idle?

Thanks all, I'll give those a shot. Re: the tach - Unfortunately it gave up the ghost just a few rides ago, so I'm estimating the 2k rpm comment. I can't turn the cable by hand when disconnected at the tach gauge, so I assume the problem is with the gauge rather than the cable. Re: bench...

Fine tuning mixture screws to fix finicky idle?

New orings and boots, but I don't recall if the orings were high quality or HW store. I'll do the spray while running test next chance I get

    Murrays Carbs.

Murray's carbs generally have a good reputation on the CX500 forum, where the twin carb configuration is a natural fit. I have no experience with them on any bike, preferring to stay stock and do my own cleaning

Fine tuning mixture screws to fix finicky idle?

'81 GS550T with 8k miles, resurrected since Fall'20 ... Doh, longer than usual, got distracted by others projects. Carbs cleaned & synced (full dis-assemble, new orings, ultrasonic, etc.), stock airbox, valves set, stock exhaust, etc. The carb cleaning wasa while ago, so some re-gumming might...

DONE - Confirm wiring in aftermarket horn switch

Answer for posterity - yes, it is that easy. Doh!

DONE - Confirm wiring in aftermarket horn switch

The 41 year old PCB for the horn switch is bent and no longer making contact. I bought an aftermarket switch and plan to wire it in. Wiring diagram shows G and B/W coming from the switch. My plan is to snip the factory wires, snip off the switch's aftermarket connectors, then connect the wires...

    fuelcock/petcock replacement

There was another similar thread where one of the posters recommended the XS option. Since I had already spent $20 on the Chinese vacuum version, I opted to take a chance on this non-vacuum version. I have a dremel tool, so if it didn't fit I could easily ream out the mounting holes a little...

    fuelcock/petcock replacement

for posterity, the $20 XS650 46-mm c-c non-vacuum petcock via Amazon had enough slack in the mounting hole size to fit my 44-mm Suzuki mounting holes. I did not have to ream anything out to make room. I used the rear exit shown in the pic as I didn't trust the the flimsy 90 deg exits fittings...

Air Screw O-Rings crushed on installation

one more check on size. If you have the original washer for the pilot screw, the oring is usually the exact same size as the washer. Also, most fit snuggly over the main body of the pilot screw. if the oring is larger than the washer or fits loosly on the screw, chances are its too big and will...

    Mounting SH775 reg/rec on GS550T

With running voltages well above 15V, the original rectifier on my '81 GS550T was clearly shot and cooking the otherwise new battery, so it was time for a replacement. Nessism graciously offered one of his stashed SH775 and lots of guidance. The images and below are captured as a reference for...

    front brake light switch logic

I bought this one. Assembly and bleeding were not problem and it's working fine the few miles it's seen so far. I had to twist the brake line a little to work with the front exit fluid port, but I had already swapped out the original line with a new one I had laying around. Hope that helps...

    fuelcock/petcock replacement

Getting back to this thread ... re: the reliability of the cheap Amazon petcocks, mine worked fine until I took the back panel off to move the vacuum port to a better position. Then the fragile membrane tore a little and I now have a gas leak. Is there an easy DIY fix for the diaphragm? If not...

    front brake light switch logic

I've replaced the front brake lever assembly on my '81 GS550T with an aftermarket ebay version. The OEM switch used the brass slider design while the new unit has the more modern two prong switch shown in pic. I would like to cut off the wires & bullet connectors from the original unit and...

    '83 GS650L - fork oil capacity?

Thx. I might drop a few cc's off that since the '83 L forks don't extend as far below the axle as the images in the manual. Or maybe the capacity is the same.
