A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Best speed/rpm for fuel economy? GS850

Get a white marker pen and draw a line on the throttle grip where it buts up to the bars. Open throttle 100% - draw another line. Then put a line in the middle of those 2 markings and further lines between those. That gives you a visual indication of your throttle position. Then go ride at 1/4...

gs550 no start when hot. trying to jet carbs.

Tight of badly seating valves, when the engine is hot, will reduce compression and create hot starting problems. Do a compression check on a hot engine. Follow the instructions of the compression tester carefully ie keep throttle wide open, remove other plugs etc

    Its in a bad way. GS1100G 1982

Yes, welcome to the GSR. I'm restoring one of these and I run another one as my regular bike. I'm in the UK in Kent if you ever need some words of encouragement. I know these bikes pretty well now. There is a link in my signature below, that will take you to my GS1100G restoration blog. You...

GS750 with Boyer Ignition - keeps cutting out

No it doesn't start, it just fires once on the one cylinder that has fuel under compression. When you turn to the kill switch back on (and without hitting the starter), the current sparks the plug and fires the one cylinder for one instance. The point being that, turning the kill switch on and...

Oh I've just had a look. There is piles of media down there. This is going to be a big job. Might just get those plugs drilled out.

New GS1100 G Restoration Project. Rebuilding my Dad's bike

Yeah Charlie, I'm 6 years in on this one. Just got diverted by the GSXs and then I ended up with a Dyno! I've on done 300 miles on a bike this year (unless you count the 1,200 dyno runs I've made). JAG came over for Christmas and she bump started the project again. All credit to her.

New GS1100 G Restoration Project. Rebuilding my Dad's bike

Day 2,324 - The Return of Vapour Blasted Parts Day 2,324 - The Return of Vapour Blasted Parts OK it has been a while. But here are the vapour blasted engine parts. Still need some sanding where the corrosion took hold but it's progress. And a reminder of what it used to look like:

GS750 with Boyer Ignition - keeps cutting out

GS750 with Boyer Branson electronic ignition, has now started cutting out. This mostly happens on start up. Starts up really good, then within a minute, shuts down dead - complete cut out. All other electrics still working. But if you turn the kill switch off and back on, it starts immediately...

    GS1000G 1980 BS34 CV Carbs - Lean Running?

Well done. Im really interested to know what it was about the old tubes that made the carbs not work. Do they have the same number stamped on them? Do they look the same? If it was me, I would be tempted just to put the old ones back in to see if the problem comes back. I know that sounds...

    MPG, what should I expect?

Mileage is directly related to throttle opening. On long journeys, I don't stick to one speed. But I do stick to around 1/8th throttle opening. Mark up your throttle grip with some Tippex (or other white marker) so that you can clearly see Closed, 1/8th, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and WOT on the throttle...

    GS1000S head bearing washer

Andy Welcome to GSR - be sure to check out the links in my signature below for the UK GS Facebook Group. Fit the washer and it's up to you whether to fit the lower dust seal. In any case the lower dust seal should not protrude further than the outer race of the bearing. So in other words...

Which bit are you calling the mixture screw plastic plug? Is that the small washer that goes on the mixture screw? Or are you talking about the rubber plug that goes next to the main jet in the float bowl?

    Hello from the uk!

Hey another Brit! Welcome. You have a good bike there. Yes there is plenty to do but who wants to buy a bike that's finished? Give us a shout if you need anything. There seems to be plenty of 550 parts floating about. Greetings Richard

    Setting float heights

You are correct sir. There is never enough force in that float chamber to bend a tang. I can't say I have ever seen one straight out of the factory to see how they are new (all mine are 35 year plus old) but they have probably been subject to all sorts of POs adjustments over the years. As has...
