Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Clutch hub movement

Is this the problem? If you have a steel insert in your hub and it looks like this then it's toast I'm afraid. If it is indeed as UK GS NUT says (lateral movement and not the inner steel insert), you could try shimming it with the shims they used on the GSX1100 / GS1150 motors. They come...

    79 gs850 popping

I had popping on one cylinder: which turned out to be bad carb synch: You may also have flooding in no.3 due to poor needle valve seat O ring: You are getting incomplete combustion OR over fuelling on that cylinder. For incomplete combustion problems, make sure the valves are closing...

High idle rpm, popping in exhaust

Pushing the tacho cable in won't make any difference to the actual engine speed. What is will do, if it's not properly inserted in the first place, is cause the tacho cable to slip and then the tacho will register inaccurately. The question is; is it the tacho that revs up and down (according...

High idle rpm, popping in exhaust

Putting oil down the cylinders will have the same effect on any bike - until it gets burnt up. The test you made and the conclusion you have reached are not valid at this time in your investigations. You need to run the bike for several 100 miles to see if the piston rings sort themselves out...

    79 GS550 not running properly

The on off nature of this problem points to electrical in my eyes. Carb / fueling issues tend to be consistent, not coming and going. If you have an air leak, for instance, it won't just fix itself and then unfix itself. Electrical issues can be more random, especially poor connections, broken...

High idle rpm, popping in exhaust

Popping on the overrun is often caused by a lean condition, where the improperly burnt fuel (doesn't burn correctly as it's too lean) comes through to the exhaust and explodes in there. It can also be valves not closing correctly and needing adjustment or re-seating. It can also (more usually on...

    Clutch damper springs rattling?

In actual fact the deep rumbling sound is not that which is produced by lose springs. They rattle. The rumble of often the issue that the hub moves laterally on the shaft and ends up (due to the helicoil gearing on the primary drive) moving from side to side. In later GS1150 models this play was...

85 GS1150EF starter clutch pics anyone?

Silly question but are you sure it's cranking slowly and sluggishly? Do you have experience of other bikes in this regard? It may be that you are chasing your tail and it's all good to go. See if it fires. Greetings

    Spain/portugal

Love it that you took the old Suke over to Spain. I thought I was the only one doing these trips on an old Suzuki. Here is one of my trips on a GS1100G: Trip to Italy I now tour on my 1984 GSX1100 EF and we are off to France again in September. Last time I went the chain broke (my fault!)...

Do the piece of wood to the ear trick - then you will know for certain. Hold the bike at a tilt too.

GS850G 1981 with runaway throttle... scary.. whats wrong with it?

Blimey have some respect for the old bike. These things aren't drag racers. The machine is trying to tell you to back off a little. Next time you hit 10K rpm expect some parts to drop out. Besides you are likely to come off driving at WOT.

GS850 high idle, one more time....

Yes there can be a big difference between bikes. Mostly with these bikes, when the cams and valves wear, the gap gets smaller and smaller. With camshafts that have rockers, when they wear the gap gets bigger. If you are having trouble finding a decent gap then you are in trouble. It is always...

GS850G 1981 with runaway throttle... scary.. whats wrong with it?

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have a question for Nessim regarding his comment about the pilot screw: "The mixture screw setting is relatively unimportant. Just set them to 2.5 turns open from lightly seated and call it done. They only affect mixture at idle and tip in." I'm always...

can you identify this engine rattle? with vid link

Take the oil filler cap off and run the engine. That'll tell you if it's the clutch. There will always be a clutch noise, so don't be perturbed if it sounds loud in there. You just want to determine if it is the same noise as the one you can hear on the video. If it is the clutch, there are...

GS850 high idle, one more time....

Here's something about the butterflies; the number stamped on them refers to the cut of the sealing surface. The butterfly valves are sort of egg shaped and they need to completely close a perfectly round hole. They do this by being fully closed at about 3 degrees off horizontal. The edge of the...

Tuning in a set of rs 40s

Maybe the carbs are too big for that motor at slow revs. It's not getting enough flow through the carbs. 38s or even 36s would have been a better bet. Bigger carbs does not mean better performance unless you are drag racing at wide open throttle.

    Throttle valve spec

Yes I have 140 butterflies in my carbs on 2 GS1100Gs. Over the years I have accumulated a number of BS Carbs and they do show different numbers on their butterflies. When I asked this question sometime ago (it might have been on a Facebook page) the answer I got was that the number refers to...

    Calling BS carb guru's !

Something wrong here. I've never seen a tab bent so far that it touches the side of the needle valve body. Have you now broken a float post? When you take the needle valve seats out, do they have little filters on them - like the ones in my video above? If they don't, have you put the needle...
