DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Clutch replacement diy

I'm just asking, as if you are not too familiar with motorcycle mechanics, why you think the clutch plates need replacing? These bikes have very very good clutches. I've never seen one with worn plates - although I'm sure there are some out there. Have you adjusted the clutch actuator arm and...

    80 GS1000 Cam plugs

I wouldn't put those cam covers in the wrong way round. If you had done that you might not have found out that there was an over pressure situation in the motor. Might have caused some other damage perhaps to oil seals that are not accessible without an engine strip. I would take the cam over...

Cam end plugs leak after rebuild

We've probably all suffered at one time or another. Here's mine doing the same (see 3:25): You just have to take off the cam cover and try again. Use new rubbers, they are nice and pliable and just a touch of goo around the D shape and a little either side. Make sure of course that the...

Valve stem seals, valve spring plus a question or 2

It think this again proves the unreliability of compression testing. Nothing you have done so far would explain the differences in compression testing results satisfactorily. Most likely cause of oil burn in this case would be that the rings need replacing and the cylinder needs honing. Or a...

What the Fork is Going On?!

I would say that they would both operate in the same manner and that there would be no problem using the set up as is. That extra metal ring is a replaceable bush that presumably was added to later models to improve the wear characteristics of the fork leg.

New GS1100 G Restoration Project. Rebuilding my Dad's bike

Engine Strip Down (1544 days since I started) Engine Strip Down (1544 days since I started) So the engine has to be completely stripped to be blasted and cleaned up. Some thing I didn't really want to do but since I have started it, I'm glad I'm doing it; it is so bad it's the only way to go...

    CV diaphragm springs

That was probably the idea. You might also find that the hole that goes through the throttle slide has been drilled out so the air pressures between the vacuum created in the throttle body and the vacuum in the upper chamber can be equalised more quickly. This was done to provide a "snappier"...

    1982 GS1100G Rectifier wiring troubles

Any sort of melting of the wires that you previously had, was most probably due to bad connectors and grounds somewhere in your wiring. You are going to have to do a complete connector clean up (search on threads here) and install the extra ground loops as suggested. Particularly from the ground...

New GS1100 G Restoration Project. Rebuilding my Dad's bike

Heads Off Heads Off Now the heads come off. All the nuts came off quite easily but I had sprayed them with WD-40 a few days ago. I was surprised by the amount of carbon build up given this was such a low mileage bike (17,000 miles maybe): But honing still showing through: Cam...

    Removing screws, intake insulators

Treat with WD-40 or any penetrating solution. Bang it head on with a big hammer. Cut a big slot with your Dremmel and then use a regular tight fitting bit in your impact driver. If you have one screw out you might be able to try moving the whole piece to help loosen it.

    Exhaust stud bolt

I've rethreaded numerous exhaust bolts, sometimes because they had sheared off and needed drilling out. The problem is the frame usually gets in the way. Especially if you want to use a Time-Sert or Heli-Coil. The drilling needs to be pretty spot on. If you haven't done it before, I would...
