A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Advice on starting after valve shim adjust. She's proving tough

OK so you checked the float bowl starter circuit passageways? Now this was my other mistake once when I first rebuilt the carbs: I put the spring for the needle in the throttle slide on the wrong side of the red washer: This has the effect of keeping the main jet closed so it would stall as...

Advice on starting after valve shim adjust. She's proving tough

Fiddling with the mix screws won't stop it starting. You are not getting any fuel into the combustion chambers. Take out the air filter and start the motor with some carb cleaner. Then you'll know for sure:

Advice on starting after valve shim adjust. She's proving tough

You've double checked the float bowl passages - haven't you? If the starter circuit is block you are a dead duck. Check this thread: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?242843-Blockage-in-Mikuni-bowls

    Factory new camshaft wear

Out of the box there should be no wear. Do you mean measurement? What part do you want the measurement for? All the manuals for all the GS models will have the limits to the amount of wear on these items. You can find the manuals here: http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/

    Blockage in Mikuni bowls

The function: you will see that there is a small copper tube attached to the main carb body that slots into this orifice. This sucks up fuel from the float bowl for the choke / starter circuit. The "Fuel to starter jet" on this diagram:

    Wrist pin replacement!!!

I'm sorry you haven't had any response from a more technical member but I know what you mean. I have wrist pins that, on the inside, are thicker in the middle. I can only imagine that they should really all be the same. Same pistons and pins. Before assembly, people often weigh them together...

Advice on starting after valve shim adjust. She's proving tough

You are using a mm feeler - aren't you? I did a whole engine with an imperial (inch) one once. Don't get caught up with compression testing. Your motor should fire in any case. Even low compression will get some combustion. If it is not firing at all, and the plugs are not wet after a decent...

    Header Paint Choice?

I've had good results with VHT but only when you use a clear coat (satin or gloss) to finish it off. It's the clear coat that makes is durable. Most paint jobs using any brand of paint fail because they are not prepared correctly in the first place. Surfaces need to be spotlessly clean and...

    Idle mixture question

The thing is Joe, these adjustments you are making affect the idle mixture and the transition from closed throttle to about 15% throttle opening. At that level of opening of the throttle you might not be able to distinguish how hard it's pulling. Although you would easily feel that it was rough...

First plug chop after carb rebuild and adjustment

Blimey you certainly know how to ring the neck off an old skool motor. I wouldn't take mine over 7,000 but each to their own. Yes, at that level the carbs are working flat out and you could be suffering a momentary shortage of fuel. Could be float levels a little low? Or some restriction in the...

    '84 1150 rebuild

Are you sure that you re-installed the clutch actuator arm on the rack correctly? There is a trick to doing it. Open the oil cap and check to see if the clutch is being uncompressed when you pull in the clutch lever.

Found nut, "washer" and metal bits clinging to the rotor when I removed the cover

Whilst the sump is off, remove the metal mesh filter and see what's inside that: That's where all the big bits end up. I agree with another poster above, that this nut is not from inside the engine. I can't recall anything like this inside. It's been dropped in - quite possibly without the...
