    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Your tank and covers seem to be in impeccable condition, don't ruin them... My vote also goes to keeping it as is. If you want that green, then I strongly recommend to use a second-hand set of covers and tank.

    Exhaust bolt replacement?

    I've put run-of-the-mill stainless steel ones into mine, with liberal application of graphite-based anti-seize. It worked fine so far, but I haven't had to take off the exhausts too much since, and I don't drive when the environment gets corrosive (salted streets sometimes during winter).

    I always put my finger on the inner race and feel how the bearing turns, compared to a new one (play, noises, force required) and then decide wether I want to go through the necessary work. I think nowadays it's not as important where a new bearing is from; but rather what you've paid for it...

    I've had good success with both a torch and ice spray. Hot/Cold cycling is your friend, though it must be noted this is happening to the exhaust bolts anyway �� Hot engine is a good call, you want the threaded portion of the bolt moving, not its head.

    Pan gasket can be reused in a pinch, no? But...looking at the exploded view drawing of the engine; it looks a bit complicated (if possible at all?) to shake/roll/fumble the pin from #4's bottom over and into the pan? It looks it could be stuck (sludge, as previous poster commented) to or around...

    A cursory google search surprisingly reveals quite a few options, actually (I won't expect those to be of the same efficiency as a full-size muffler, but at least one isn't a complete a$s).

    Never? It is my understanding that the direct-acting OHC mechanism is superior to a design involving rockers, and is an evolution of the latter. Yes, adjustment is fiddly compared to locknut/screw, but in every other aspect it's better. Lower adjustment intervals, less moving parts, less play...
