A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

what did you wrench on today??

Well, something a bit different for me today: Dishwasher. Mine, a recent but bottom-line model (it was a gift) complained about something and didn't complete washing cycles. Now since these models are built to a price (and often have the same internal components and only different branding)...

Bike has 0 power under load when under 4000rpm?

I'd attribute such abysmally poor power to one or more cylinders not working. Since your carbs are most likely in order, do a compression check and focus on your ignition system. You said coils are ok - what are the values? And what's the story with your spark plugs and plug caps?

    ultrasonic solution recommendations?

I'd like to highlight that it's important to use demineralized/distilled water, otherwise you'll most likely get chalk/lime deposits (same effect when you heat up water). You might get away with tap water if your water supply is on the soft side, or your solution can compensate it, but don't...

    GS550E valve question

The cleaning solution was distilled water with a squirt of liquid dish soap. That can't cut through dried out/varnished fuel. Maybe if you leave it soaking for centuries... Your friend explained the gist of it correctly. But note that the ultrasonic waves travel don't magically stop at any...

    GS550E valve question

Well, it did clean the passages on my carbs. Needed time though.

    Rossi News: guess what?

Was he being a douche or simply no longer one of the best? If the latter, I don't know how that's embarrassing? (Or am I missing a nuance of the english language here? Non-native speaker.)

converting bike to run off vapors

ICEs still run this way. Carbs are/were just an optimized version of this, and fuel injection is even more optimized. The basic principle stays the same: fuel and air is mixed and ignited at some point. Trying this just to get rid of your carbs would be a mighty stupid thing to do, but it could...

    please explain soda blasting process

Nobody said you did – it's just so you don't repeat PO's mistake. Seems to be a design mistake on the CV's, the pins came out very easily on my VM's (or maybe the dies were either very fresh or very worn out when the bodies of my carbs were cast).

    1984 GS550e side panels

These are panels for the L models, which have a different frame arrangement/geometry. They're not correct for your bike. Edit: The tail fits your frame, if I'm not mistaken. However, to my knowledge, the model with that tail wasn't sold in europe and is specific to N.A., so I can't help out...

    please explain soda blasting process

Experiment what works best for you. We've discussed some options in this thread here: click. Personally, I simply use distilled water with some dish-washing liquid and sometimes some citric acid, others dilute carb dip...find out what works best for you, and maybe share with the forum. Just...

Back Into Bikes, '77 GS750 Project

That's way too low. IIRC, those should read between 120-180 psi, lower limit being 100, and maximum difference between the cylinders around 28 psi.

    1978 GS550e Carb Bowls Overflowing

The bowl gaskets should not leak, at all. I've had the needle valve obstructed in my VM's, but the gaskets didn't leak – fuel got spit out of the overflow tube, like it should in that case. Get good bowl gaskets first, you'll need them anyway, and it's way cheaper than a needle valve set. You...

Less Toxic and Offensive Test Fluid?

Methinks until you get that magic fluid, using double-layered nitrile gloves (like the ones Edd China uses) should do the trick. As for respiration, modern masks as used by painters maybe...?

Bike Shuts off when turn signal used.

Not sure about the 850L's wiring (you know that dreaded canceling unit and whatnot). There's so much that could be wrong...what have you done so far, other than replacing the switch? How did you come to the conclusion that the switch is the culprit?
