A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

I think I uploaded all of the photos to Flickr in 2017, and then Photobucket had a change of heart and offered the $4.99 deal, so I took it. I had some of the links converted to Flickr and the rest are Photobucket. I'm fairly certain I posted my zinc plating process, in detail, somewhere in...

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

I have another reason for posting on this thread - I'm curious as to who is still looking at it. I have been paying Photobucket $4.99 a month for years now to keep the pictures hosted (I migrated some of them to Flickr, too lazy to do the rest) If nobody's looking, I may cancel Photobucket.

It is - the original front fender just didn't work with the vibe of the bike. I wanted something that looked a bit more edgy, and that fender fit the bill. Also, it installs without any modifications.

    GS1000 fuel cap gasket/seal - anyone found a replacement?

Joe, It's been awhile since I re-keyed my new gas cap, but it wasn't difficult at all - look at some earlier posts in this thread and the procedure for removing the lock cylinder is given. By rearranging the wafers in the new lock cylinder and substituting some of the old ones, I was able to...

Finally available at a decent price - FULL SYNTHETIC Rotella T6 15w40 (not 5w40)

I'm a heavy equipment mechanic and work on diesel engines all the time - we sometimes run into oil consumption problems with 5w40 in older diesels. For older engines with greater tolerances (due to wear) and air-cooled applications in general, having a full-synthetic 15w base stock might be...

Finally available at a decent price - FULL SYNTHETIC Rotella T6 15w40 (not 5w40)

FYI: About $22 at Wally World JASO-MA/MA2 approved. The blue jug T6 was only formulated in 5w40 for a long time - the 15w40 full syn is relatively new.

Initial impressions: clutch pull is buttery smooth and requires considerably less effort than my cable setup. However, the proof is in the pudding - I need to see what it's like out on the road.

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

The clutch hydraulic line is a cut-to-size arrangement. The slave end has a banjo fitting crimped on it, and the other end is just plain - once you route the line and cut it to size, you slide on the strain relief boot, the nut, the crush sleeve, and insert the ferrule into the end of the tube...

Step 3 - The Clevis: Originally, I was going to use a shorter and narrower clevis stolen from an old clutch cable. Unfortunately, when I mounted the slave cylinder in the engine case standoff with the adapter I made, I noticed that the clutch arm sits higher than the slave cylinder rod. With...

As promised, here is a detailed write-up on Francine's conversion from a cable-actuated clutch to a Magura Hymec hydraulic system. Preface - why am I doing this? A. I have tendinitis in my left arm that weakens the grip in my left hand. Although my arm is improving, extended rides combined...

Update: was going to post the entire process this weekend, but ran into some complications - nothing that can't be overcome with some additional parts, ingenuity, and garage engineering. Parts will be arriving 4/28 and 4/29, assembly will be happening on Sat 5/2.
