A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

Randy and Karsten are good people, and sometimes they are out of town for racing events. Best way to get in touch with them is to call or stop by their shop.

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

I totally had a brain fart with respect to the needle tips - repainting them didn't even cross my mind  As for my chrome shop, they are indeed local. Unfortunately, because of the less-than-perfect finish on my speedo covers (has more to do with the way they handled the situation), I...

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

I had about 10pcs rechromed and these cost around $35 ea. Unfortunately, the originals were pitted and the metal is fairly thin - to obtain a smooth finish one must fill the pits with solder, lay down several layers of copper, smooth everything down, and then chrome it. Unfortunately, my...

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

FINALLY done with the gauge cluster... Been working long hours at the job and had other stuff happening on the weekends. Rear covers rechromed (ok job, would pick another rechrome shop in the future) Housing soda blasted and painted White lettering repainted Mounting bracket powder coated...

    Speedometer disassembly and lens removal

Folks, The plan was to disassemble the speedometer to make sure the drive mechanism was lubed properly, etc. The more I thought about that course of action, I realized that the juice wasn't worth the squeeze - I didn't want to damage to the needle, gauge face, or trip knob. So, I removed the...

    Speedometer disassembly and lens removal

The threaded tube where the speedo cable connects prevents you from lifting/tilting the assembly out of the bucket. I thought abiout this but cant see any way it would work.

Can someone give me a hint as to how to remove the trip reset knob without destroying anything?

    Speedometer disassembly and lens removal

Folks, Is there a way to safely disassemble the speedometer and tachometer to my 1978 GS1000E - I would like to clean the inside of the lenses. From the outside, it appears that the ring that surrounds the edge of the lens is either glued to the speedo/tach body or it snaps on. Either way...

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

So, I thought about what you said, and I decided to *not* be lazy... Scuffed the lettering with some 400 grit sandpaper, wiped it with some alcohol, used Testors modeling paint in gloss white and applied it with a toothpick. IMG_1688 by Anthony Monteleone, on Flickr I will be painting the...

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

Once I get the harness reworked and figure out where all of the electrics will be mounted, the battery box and a bunch of other small parts will be going to my powdercoater. I may have to weld some mounting brackets to the fuse panel tray, etc, to make things look tidy. May as well wait until...

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

Today's progress, 11/1 Nothing exciting, but I got the footpegs fully installed and I finally finished modifying the battery box to provide some extra clearance. I'm using an AGM battery that can be mounted in any orientation, so, the battery will be on its side. I had to do this because my...

I may not paint the lettering on the meter pod - even from the factory, the paint wasn't very good and usually faded or flaked off in a short time.

    Progress!!! 1978 GS1000E Restoration/Performance Rebuild

Nothing exciting today, but I took apart the speedo cluster to pretty it up... The exterior was looking rough, so I soda blasted the plastic housing to even the finish and then gave it a few coats of gloss black plastic paint. I didn't want to deal with bubbling chrome due to corrosion developing under it. Stainless coloring due to heat adds character :-)

I believe they are 296mm - they are early CBR900 rotors, as suggested by Salty Monk in his dual piston brake bracket kit.
