A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

• Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Are all Polaris R/Rs created equal?

The Polaris part number for this R/R is 4012941. You can get one new from Polaris dealers online or maybe locally. You can also get them used on eBay for about 1/3 to 1/2 the price but you have to be careful you don't wind up with a knock-off or "compatible replacement". Lots of them look...

Restuffing seat

This is relevant to my interests as well. I need a new seat cover and foam. The seat cover is no big deal but I've searched all over and have no idea what kind of foam to buy. I'm fine with whatever is close to stock in firmness and I can shape/glue it myself.

Vintage bike ownership experience...

I had a low-mileage GS750E that I would have ridden anywhere. My L model is not good for long trips even when it's in the best of shape and right now it needs maintenance even as it sits.

Mechanic says its time to let go of '81 GS750EX

Fixing the root cause is easy, just replace the petcock and change the oil. However, I can tell you exactly why the mechanic wanted no part of this. If the bike was running on thinned-out oil for a long time, there's no telling what damage was done to the engine internally. In the best case, no...

I dropped my bike in a parking lot once. I momentarily forgot that you can't have the bike leaned over when you come to a stop.

Got a wrong o-ring with my oil filter

Some filter manufacturers ship with no o-ring, or they have different part numbers for the 1st-gen and 2nd-gen GS o-rings, even though the filter is the same, and some ship with both o-rings. You can probably re-use the existing o-ring this time then swap it out at the next oil change.

Part number stamped on carbs?

Wowwee! Yeah, that's not right. I get the impression that that carb was sitting in a parts bin somewhere and someone just chucked other parts on top of it. That's just about the only way to get such a messed up throttle plate and body. FYI I probably won't be able to stop by again until some...

Finding neutral when rolling

Took too many comments for someone to finally mention this. I will sometimes shift into neutral while sitting at a very long light to give my clutch fingers a break (as long as there is already one car stopped behind me) but I can't think of a single valid reason why you'd want to shift into...

WTH .. I think I lost my captain courageous !

Never had a captain courageous in me, but I've always respected the bike and never pushed my limits. I do ride somewhat spirited whenever possible, though it's more about twisting the throttle than trying to wear out the edges of the tires. It's about knowing your abilities, your state of mind...

Some general riding questions

I ran out of gas, once. Out riding with the wife, low on gas. Thought there was a gas station where we were going, and there wasn't. Had to double back to where I knew there was a station. The engine stalled just as we made the turn into the station. :D

Stripped bottom bolt in oil filter cover

That's actually a fantastic idea. I replaced the studs and nuts on my 850 but forgot the blue threadlock. Luckily, I noticed the small drip of oil in my garage before I lost the other two going down the road.

List of tools & parts

This would have saved me a year ago when my throttle cable broke at the grip on the way to work. I ended up parking it and walking the rest of the way to work. That evening, called the wife to come pick me up and bring an assortment of tools. I rode the bike home by clamping the vice...

THANK YOU! to the GS forum on the restoration of my 79 GS1000L

Holy cow, I missed this thread the first time around. That bike looks amazing, you did a great job and your writing speaks to the passion you put into it. I can tell you're not accustomed to doing a job halfway. And by the way, I just love how this went from "bah, I'm bored, maybe I'll try to...

Throttle Tube Replacement

Never heard of an aftermarket throttle tube for GSes. And I don't think they're a generic thing either... the length and diameter are probably common enough but where it slots into the switch housing is probably very GS (and possibly model) specific. OEM is your best bet. If your existing...

GS850 high idle, one more time....

While I'm not as much of an expert as some gurus around here, I have managed to get my 850 running great. Like they say, you won't get very far only doing some of the maintenance. Since we both live in the same neck of the woods, I'd be willing to stop by and offer a hand. I have everything...
