A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

• Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Do I need to replace my base gasket?

That's pretty normal of the GS chokes from what I've seen. Very touchy if you want somewhere between no choke and full choke. When I start my 850, I start it on full choke and then stand there for a good 30 seconds slowly pushing it in until it settles around 2000 rpm. By the time I put...

Source for gaskets?

I've had okay luck with aftermarket gaskets from places like Z1 Enterprises and ebay. Head and base gaskets from Suzuki only. On my bucket list is to try my luck making gaskets from material.

I took my GS 650 on a motocross track...

Okay, that is eff'n cool. I take my L model out to dirt roads once in a while but the weight, shyt suspension, and street tires force me to keep the speed and hooning down to a minimum.

I really want to take that Kat for a lap or two.

Broken cam chain = bent valve

This is actually the second time I've seen those screws back out and ruin an engine. The first was when I was helping a friend get his GS700E running again. He was redoing the top-end for some reason I don't recall now and he bought a second-hand set of cams off eBay. Well apparently the PO of...

Wierd issues...

What the other guys said about the other stuff. It does sound a lot like a clogged petcock or something of the sort. Also, check the valve clearances as soon as you can. With only 10k miles they're almost certainly just fine if the bike starts up without much complaint. This is a very normal...

Mac Motorcycle Seat Covers --- Ebay Store

Good info, thanks. The seat cover on my L model is basically a wreck at this point and I've been meaning to get something done about it. I don't really like the look of the OEM seat cover (what pitreplica sells) and figured a custom-made seat would cost a few hundred at least. But these look...

1980 GSX750E Racer project

Yes, change those caliper pistons and get new OEM seals. The pitting will wear away your new seals prematurely. It's from water getting into the brake fluid.

Fix-a-flat for Slow Leak

This is the way to go. First, check to make sure that it's not the valve leaking. I've seen this on many of the slow-leak tires I've owned. If it is, that's an easy fix, just replace the valve. Next check around the rims. If it's leaking where the tire seats on the rim, you have to...

Neat trick with those indicator faces, I'm going to have to remember that!

Drew's 83 750e project

Dang! Nice! Would love to find a decent 700E or 750E for anywhere near that price around here.

What should I attack first if on a budget

Cleaning the carbs is not hard at all, especially if you're on a budget. Just read up on the instructions, ask questions, get your supplies/tools in order, and make a plan. Of course, if the bike runs and idles fine, then there's no reason to clean them. It's good to check the valves, of...

Thoughts on my rear piston?

Chances are fairly good the piston is pitted in that one too. I haven't seen a set of original calipers opened up that didn't have pitted pistons. What usually happens is that people forget that the brake fluid (and lines, if they're the original rubber ones) have to be replaced every two years...

1982GS1100G or GS1100GL ?

Can't say I love the looks of my L (needs a complete paint job, dirty as hell) but it sure is a fun ride.

Does mag/aluminum polish do any kind of decent job at protecting bare aluminum?

Clueless electrical member testing R/R diode

I would not bother trying to ohm out the R/R. The best way to check whether the bike is charging properly is to start at the stator and measure the voltage there will the bike running, as per the service manual. If that checks out fine, reconnect the stator to the R/R (bypassing the loop up...

gs850 1979 gs 1000g

I believe if nothing else, the intake ports will be sized differently, both between a GS850 and GS1000, and a 1979 and 1980.

Kiwi Canuck tries his Luck with a Six Fiddy

Nice score, I've envious. I'm pretty sure my next bike, whatever it is, will have fuel injection but I'd still trade my 850L for a 650E in a heartbeat. They look great and I have a feeling they go pretty well too.

Charging issues.

Not saying it's your problem, but you might try another multimeter as well just to be sure you're getting the right readings. Some (usually cheaper) multimeters only read AC correctly when it's 50-60 Hz and a perfect sine wave. You say you have replaced the R/R, what did you replace it with...

Digital Gauges

For the tach drive in the engine, either replace it with an OEM solid aluminum plug (made for GS years with electronic tachs, they are plentiful) or take your existing one, remove the gear and seal, and fill it with JB Weld. (This is what I did.) For the speedo, remove the gear that connects to...
