A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

FWIW: For now, I've simplified the ignition wiring by soldering the brown, gray, and orange all onto the orange terminal: All 3 have 12+ volts when key is in 'on' position now, although I don't have the tail-light only setting anymore. Bike is back on the road. I'm still mystified as to why...

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

sure does. but doesn't start unless ignition is on.

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

Guys. Guys. I spoke too soon. It stopped working again. At this point, I have two ignition pucks; they both do the exact same thing. 1) jumping the wiring harness at the 4-pin connector brings the lights/ignition/etc on every time. 2) Plugging in either of the pucks, I get a solenoid 'click'...

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

The narrower arm to the left would be a good fit for the key barrel...but actually, it goes in the wider one to the right. Go figure.

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

As I always suspect: I was doing it wrong. Multimeter showed everything good except the ignition switch/puck, even though all leads on the puck had continuity. Further investigation showed that I had (as a previous poster warned) reassembled the internals 180 degrees wrong. I should have...

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

I have a meter, and have tested some of these things but not all of them. Thx

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

Hmm. Springs (4) and balls (2) are back in their holes, copper connectors cleaned and re-installed. Still nothing: Its cool to know what the key does (and why contact cleaner in the barrel didn't fix the electrics)...but the search continues.

Thanks to all: that gives me a direction to go. Appreciate the good advice.

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

What would bad internals look like? visible corrosion, or just bad spirits hiding in there?

does bad starter relay = no lights/power when key is on? where am I going wrong?

I haven't found an answer via search function. I stare at the wiring diagram and It's probably obvious, but I don't know. Thanks for any insights! 1980 GS850. Good charging system health, (known good battery properly trickle charged. SH775 reg/rec, Installed a cheap voltemeter), Battery is...

    Front Master Cylinder...about that hole....

Yup. looks like previous attempts with blunter objects had peened the aluminum around until there was no hole. A wire bristle wouldn't touch it, but cleaning up the hole followed by judicious use of a skinny point as a punch has opened up a tiny little hole, just big enough for a guitar high e...

    Front Master Cylinder...about that hole....

Thanks steve..I'll work on that more. A bristle seems to not want to go into it, and the fact that the inside of the bore seems so unmarked there...maybe my previous attempts to open it schmeared it over. Thabks for quick response!

    Front Master Cylinder...about that hole....

In various threads about rebuilding the front master cylinder, there is a common refrain of 'the second return hole'....a very small hole that lets fluid flow back and not cause the brakes to bind/lock over repeated use. My '80 850 has an issue...the PO (a forum guru and a real stand-up guy)...

who has used throw-over soft bags?

I bought some shiny new Nelson Rigg 855s.. seem to fit over seat fine and fit a bag o' groceries per side. Hoped to under-seat them, but they Reeeeally wanna sit down on the exhaust then, even with the straps shortened up considerable. Thanks everyone for advice.. (and Salty Monk for the used...

Bellingham to Boise ADV style on an 850..

I don't recall the brands; I know he started with older tires and kept picking up free/cheap ones at bike salvage yards. He had extras strapped on the tail!

Bellingham to Boise ADV style on an 850..

A fiend/sometimes bike mechanic made this a couple years ago.... '83 850, mostly backroads. Trip involved changing out the rear hub and transmission while camping out in the boonies! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PTDr9W8Ffc

who has used throw-over soft bags?

Well, The new bike (1980 850G) has no luggage rack...and it is in such nice shape, I'm tempted to keep it all clean and clear. But toting some groceries or supplies is part of most rides... previous bikes had a rear rack with a stacking tailbag assembly... I'm looking at various throw-over...
