A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Leak Around Headers, Vance & Hines Exhaust

The studs are M8 x 1.25 ... I don't know how long they are... take one out and measure it. Dorman sells studs, available at any auto parts store.

    Oil pressure

The GS motors with roller bearing bottom ends are low pressure. They don't NEED pressure, just flow. The GS (x) motors with "shell" bottom end need the same oil pressure as any "shell" bottom end. You WANT 30psi at idle, and it should increase 10psi per 1000rpm, to a max of around 80psi.

    Wiring ground question

Pretty simple: Take your multi meter and read the resistance between the steering head and the area of the battery box. Steel frames are OK for grounds for an analog on/off switch, but not for anything LIKE a sensor.... like in the voltage regulator The problem with aluminum is aluminum oxide...

1980 GS400e Manual Spark Advance / Electronic Ignition

The slide in your CV carb can "hang up" and do that. You might want to look at the carbs. On every race bike I have ever owned I wired/locked the timing advance cam to full advance, and the revs don't 'hang up" like that. .. and I too am Canadian, and to me a GS is 2 valve, and the GSx is a 4...

    Which thread repair?

Heli-coil and the like seem to get a bad rep... but I always take it with a grain of salt as usually the guy telling me the thread repair is CRAP, is the guy that just galled all the thread off his sparkplug or drain plug. Thread inserts were not originally designed as thread repair. A properly...

Barrels pistons rings questions... 1978 GS750

You have a picture of you measuring a piston, just under the rings, in line with the pin, with a caliper. That measurement means nothing. To measure the piston, use a micrometer. A caliper is not accurate enough. Measure the piston at the SKIRT, in three directions, start at 90 degrees from the...

Recommend a good tap and die set

R&N, Union Butterfield or my fav SKF/DORMER (not US made... but neither am I) An industrial supplier will have a house brand, made in asia, and a decent brand, NOT made is asia... BUY THE DECENT BRAND. ... and you probably don't need a " set". Buy #1, 2 and 3 taps in the sizes you NEED. You...

    Oil Filter Stud thread repair

E-Z LOK thread insert M6x1.0 ID Drill 8.6mm (0.339") and tap to M10x1.5 They come in two lengths or you could drill it out and install a plug.... I would probably weld it up and drill and tap a new hole

Stainless steel will oxidize at about 5-600 degrees F, which is an entirely acceptable exhaust gas temp for a 4 stroke

r/r questions: how to find out if r/r is series or shunt?

As close to the battery as you can. I usually go directly to the battery. The new R/Rs don't pull much power.

    Rotella T4,T5, or T6?

T4 is OK if you have a roller bottom end If you don't have a roller bottom end, buy motorcycle oil. Rotella is NOT good oil, Rotella is CHEAP oil... and the reason you wanted Rotella was higher levels of ZDDP or Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates, and Rotella was reformulated a couple of years ago...

    1979 GS1000 Oil control problem

If it's valve seals, you'll get a puff of smoke after a downshift, when the vacuum is high If it's rings it'll smoke on heavy acceleration. If it's rings a wet compression test will give you higher numbers. If I was doing anything, it'd get rings, seals and a valve job... at least. The thing is...

    Hot Stator Wires

You don't measure the AC voltage in reference to ground. Measure the three stator leads to each other. AB BC AC Measure each of the stator leads for connectivity to ground (there shouldn't be any)... and a multi meter doesn't really have enough power to do this, I used to use a insulation...

Check the AC output of the stator If the AC voltage doesn't drop with revs: You have a regulator problem If the AC voltage does drop with revs: You have a stator problem

    Cu head gasket

That valve need to be ground. You can see a ditch where it sits on the seat. You need to accurately measure the piston and bore to decide if you can re-use them. If you're holding a piston with 40 year old rings, you replace the rings, at least.

Where to get oversize pistons for GS1000??

if you DO go with a 1085 kit, try to find a Yosh kit. The Wiseco uses old thick rings where the Yosh uses modern 1mm rings. If you do go with Wiseco I have a free set of 73.5mm rings for you in Omemee. Who is doing the machining? They can USUALLY tell what size/over bore you need BEFORE you...
