A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. Plastics painting vs metal

These days it's better to stick to one manufacturer. Not sure what brand 2K clear you're using. but it should be OK as long as your plastic adhesion, primer, and base coat are all from the same place. Dupli-Color makes a good product if you're going to use rattle cans. Plastic adhesion should...

    Prepping tank for shipping

That's a good point. Cleaning out a tank's inside with Acetone removes gas residue nicely. Letting it breathe for a day or so afterwards, better yet.

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

As far as I know, Suzuki just painted them gloss black. Whoever powder coats it can get it about as smooth as it's gonna get when they sandblast the parts. It gets all the nooks and crannies. For years I used to spend crazy hours sanding, prepping and painting frames..until having my bike...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

I would powder coat all the frame parts the same, including the other parts you mentioned. Personally, I like gloss black. It easier to clean then a semi-gloss and it's closer to the factory finish.

    Prepping tank for shipping

I always wrapped parts in blue paper shop towels. Very soft and won't scratch the new paint. Tape them together to get it around the tank..then lots of bubble wrap. Make sure it isn't rubbing the paint anywhere. Shipping peanuts, news papers, bubble wrap to fill all the voids so the tank...

    Solution for cracked plastics?

Save your self hours of work by simply using 2-part plastic epoxy available at any hardware store. Get the stuff that dries in 5-10 minutes. It comes in side-by-side syringes so even the mixing ratio is done for you. V the cracks with a Dremel tool and sand the areas that are broken. Add the...

Larry Pearson replica in the making

That's a really cool bike, Rijko. I'm sure the more modern brakes, suspension and wheels are a treat. I like the chin spoiler, too. Period correct Yosh pipes are like hen's teeth. I looked for a year before finding one in mint condition..for 11 dollars. I still shake my head at what a stroke of...

Larry Pearson replica in the making

It is, Steve, and I should be more grateful I guess. I've seen so many S models that have borrowed styling cues from my bike since it got featured here, in Cycle World, and Moto-Retro Illustrated along with on-line features like Pipeburn and BikeFX. I've thought it would be funny if someone...

Larry Pearson replica in the making

Thanks for mentioning that Rijko. Yeah, Mitch became a good long-distance friend after seeing pictures my S on line and wanting to feature in his magazine Moto-Retro Illustrated. Great magazine, but it didn't last but just a couple of years. We've stayed in touch about making a clone of mine...

Time to repaint a nearly perfect tank :)

The reflection says it all. Nicely done.

What bike are you painting? Is it the one used as your avatar?

    Dented 1000s tank restore

Turned out nice, Chuck. Good job. ;)

    Which one of you...

Kinda like what starving artists have done over the centuries to save on canvas. Just paint over an existing painting..

    Dented 1000s tank restore

Nice to get bigger pics for sure, Chuck. Thanks for that. The only thing outside your process, that seems to work for the way you do it, is what Ed offered earlier in a post. I would have primed the entire tank in high-build primer to make sure all the sand scratches come out before laying...

    Dented 1000s tank restore

A quart of PPG Concept clear with the hardener is over $200..a pint of red costs $300, pearls even more. 3M masking tape costs 17 bux a roll..it starts to add up to almost $1,000 to get just enough quality materials to do a bike these days..let alone what it would cost to paint a car.

    Dented 1000s tank restore

Because of the rarity of a true S tank, fully restored in and out, I would think $900 would be fair for all parties concerned. Maybe more. I used to charge $800 just to re-paint an S tank. Materials prices have more then doubled since then.
