A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    New tires

Just to be sure, your bike is a GS550e, right? Parts fiche shows only a GS550L for '80 model year. GS550e was '79. Unless you happen to have L model? Like Steve mentioned, on a GS550e, the rear wheel size is 2.15, 18 inch, not 17 inch. L model has a 2.5-17 inch. Front wheel is a very skinny...

    MAC 4-1 megaphone exhaust

Unfortunately, the V & H website no longer lists systems for the GS650G/GL. Evenything for 750 and up still available. From what I could find, MAC is the only game still going for the 650 models. Maybe a decent used set will appear in time.

    HELP! Battery?

I'll take a guess. I think that the relay, starter or connection you mentioned is the likely problem. BUT, the AGM's and their distant cousin, the true gell battery can do some very strange things when they start to go off course. The AGM batteries are said to have some peculiar charging...

    Exhaust flange bolts, 1981 GS650G

I always thought that the M of M sounded a little crazy, but always remembered it. I've used it occasionaly on things like auto brake caliper mount bolts. It seemed to do ok. I heard that M of M story more than 45 years a go and it was in a military setting. Those wrenches did all sort of things...

    Exhaust flange bolts, 1981 GS650G

I did get lucky with the exhaust mount bolts that I need, as Partszilla's supplier had exactly 8 in stock and they ship today. It's amazing what is still available with or without an extra 4 day supplier wait. Of course so much is long gone! I've been getting their parts in about 4 days for in...

    Exhaust flange bolts, 1981 GS650G

Thank you Steve! I may try to source something suitable near home, depending on how soon Partszilla can ship them. Might be tough with the exact shank set up, etc. I know from other adventures that stainless into aluminum is not the best idea, even with anti-seize.

    Exhaust flange bolts, 1981 GS650G

Good idea, thanks! I'm new to 4 cylinders and didn't consider that. I have the OEM bolts already ordered. On what was expected to be a low cost rider, I'm already into multiples of the purchase price. To be expected. If I hadn't needed to replace the oil pan, I likely wouldn't have ever pulled...

    Exhaust flange bolts, 1981 GS650G

I believe standard for an 8mm bolt would be 1.25 I can get it checked. I didn't know about the part no. revealing some size info.

    Exhaust flange bolts, 1981 GS650G

Today, I continued diving into many problems I've found from likely multiple PO's on my recently purchase '81 GS 650G. One of the top jobs was replacing the oil pan due to a stripped drain plug hole which was doctored up with goop, etc. I soon found I was best off removing the 4 into 1 pipe to...

    750 engine into 650 frame?

I don't want to hijack the OP's thread, but as a new GS650g owner, I have been curious about the varying power ratings found for this bike. Also vs. the rarer GS650E. Although most sources list all the GS650's as 72 hp, I found a site with an old 1981 period review ( UK?) on the '81 models and...

Yeah, the flowers have to go! The pipe is quite loud to me with not so great hearing. Not a bother until about 5k rpm. I'll look into different baffles, but all that will wait until at least this Winter.

Progresssive 412's in 13.5 inch. Supposedly, the "heavier duty version of this "standard" shock. Hoping this means something like a 90/150 spring. I didn't want to get into pricier shocks on this.

One more. Not a big fan of the 4 into one pipe, but will stay that way for some time.

    New to GS's and forums

I got the 650G home successfully last Thurs. evening. It runs and stops, but needs attention in a number of areas. I'll be taking a look at a number of things and will need new state inspection. Many gaskets, clutch springs, shocks, etc., etc. on order. Just a new set of plugs, new oiled air...

GS650G rear tire and wheel size

Good information, thanks! Upon further looking around, it looks like I could get a matched set of BS BT45's, if I go with a 120 rear. I had used them in the past on an old airhead. I have used several sets of the BS S11 Spitfires as well, which I preferred, but wouldn't find a rear in my size...

GS650G rear tire and wheel size

Thanks for the info on the splines/model years and tire size. The 'splines work until they don't' makes perfect sense.

Thanks, Rich. Good luck to your son! I'm a '70's grad of Kutztown, post military. That campus has been much expanded and landscaped to the 9's, compared to my days there. They had a huge enrollment increase some years a go, now declining, like all the State Universities. Great school.

    New to GS's and forums

Thanks to all for the welcome and the good info on the splines and clutch. Good to know that the bad wheel splines didn't appear until '82. I'll be checking things out after I actually get the GS, This '81 is black. My test ride was only in 2nd gear in the rain in a back alley. Unfortunately, I...

GS650G rear tire and wheel size

Newbie here to GS forums. In a couple of days, I'll be buying a '81 GS650G. Yes, I don't even have it yet, but trying to do some planning already around multiple other projects. The seller had mounted a rear Shinko in 130/90/17 size. From what little I rode this bike, it seemed to feel strange...

    New to GS's and forums

I just enrolled on this fine site. I live in Eastern Pa., US. I've stuck my head in a few times over the years and enjoyed what I read. In a few days, I'll be buying my first GS, an '81 GS650G, It shows about 25k miles and decent original paint. It runs, but I only took it on a few passes up and...
