A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Cylinder block studs

Unless overtightened and stretched the stock studs are usually ok. Stock studs have a bulge (shoulder) at the transition from the end of the threads to the beginning of the plain shank to prevent them being screwed into the case too far and breaking out the bottom of the hole. These can be...

    Setting the timing properly

Save yourself a lot of time. Space the head so it clears the piston then clay the head with a non springy compound that won't decompress slightly and give false readings when the pressure is released. Playdoh isn't really suitable. Oil the head and piston so the "clay" doesn't stick. Once done...

    '78 GS750 Heavy Clutch & Adjustment issues

It's called the clutch HUB.. Notching of the grooves can be eased off with the use of a file . If you are careful and don't go any further than the bottom of the grooves they will all end up the same width and the plate load will be spread evenly across the whole assembly.

Five year old thread back from the dead.. Don't think you will get a reply from 5HRINE. He's no longer a member..

Draining fuel and carbs for winter

I personally wouldn't drain the tank and carbs dry. You are increasing the potential for oxidisation in the tank and carbs and other issues with the drying out and hardening of 'o' rings, fuel pipe etc which may not recover and require more work with replacement. The best method is to keep the...

    Setting the timing properly

I've been building race engines, drag bikes and much more for over 40 years and i'm not saying you should stop what you are doing but you need to understand what you are doing and go about it correctly otherwise there's no learning involved. I would be wary of altering those cast pistons...

    Setting the timing properly

You cannot presume anything. The pistons do not match the head and you have no idea of the compression ratio. The distance between the valves and piston have no bearing on the compression ratio, it's the combustion chamber volume.. You cannot just fit a thicker gasket and cross your fingers...

    Setting the timing properly

You really shouldn't stack fibre/paper base gaskets to gain the clearance as the tolerances will be inconsistent and alter when they are compressed. The correct method is to use an aluminium block spacer which will accurately retain the required height adjustment. The problem with this 740cc...

    Setting the timing properly

With the pistons hitting the head you would summise that even with clearancing the chamber in that spot the piston may then hit elsewhere or the compression may be too high anyway and beyond that once you have a non contact situation between the piston and head you will then need to ensure you...

    Setting the timing properly

To check if it's warped enough to cause problems just bolt the bare head ( valves and springs removed) to the motor and fit the cams . If they spin freely with the head torqued up you are good to go.

    curiosity camshaft cap

No reason except for mass production it's cheaper and quicker to thread a hole and fit a bolt rather than a stud, nut and washer. Why use three components when one will do the job.

    Help! Carburetor/fuel mixture problem (I think) 1979 GS1000

I was refering solely to the GS1000's to which this thread applies not the whole suzuki range and depending on country the GS1000GL custom retained the VM carbs for 1980..

    Help! Carburetor/fuel mixture problem (I think) 1979 GS1000

Correct. Your 79 GS1000 has VM slide carbs.. Not CV's. CV's came in 1980 but not on all models.

    Dyna ignition

The "NEW" system has available for over 20 years. It's the Dyna 'S'. I have them on all my bikes. Fits in place of the points backplate and just 3 wires to connect.

Sounds more like the clutch actuator is in the wrong position, the thrust bearing has been left out or similar.

    Help with Ignition Points

Might be better to junk the points and fit a Dyna 'S'. Fit and forget. Stronger spark, easier starting and more power.

GS1000G Clutch - New Cable - Slips @ speed but won't slip when stationary.

Slick 50,Molyslip and other friction reducers etc are not for use in engines with wet clutches running in the same oil. It works great in cars, trucks and old brit pre unit stuff etc where the clutch is dry or in a seperate oil bath.
