Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

'83 1100E very hard starting, starter motor switching directions

Tom203 - if this were the case, I should be able to tell by checking the amperage drawn by the motor with one of those contactless inductive ammeters while cranking the engine right? my multimeter has one of those, if that works I'll try that before I buy a new starter once I get oil back in the...

'83 1100E very hard starting, starter motor switching directions

It's been a bear to start nearly since I bought it last summer. I have gotten it to start a few times, and taken it out for a short ride twice. most recently I got it started and drove it from my old house to where I live now as part of that move. I haven't gotten it started since that most...

Drive sprocket oil leak + damage questions

I have to admit I'm afraid to shoot gunk around the front sprocket. do I need to protect my chain, or do I just need to rinse it off and lube it afterwards? Maybe it's best if I pop the master link and remove the chain entirely before I clean up in there?

    Stuck clutch - oil issue?

the plates were perfectly loose and happy when I opened up the basket, no sign of anything being fused or frozen together. I also don't see any indication that there's any problem with the clutch release mechanism, the pushrod and pushrod bearing appear to be in perfect working condition, and...

    Stuck clutch - oil issue?

I haven't cleaned up the steels and checked them for warping yet, I will and will follow up but I ran out of shop towels so I need to get more before I get back into the grime ;) I did get a picture of the splines on the friction disks though. They also definitely show some sign of wear. I...

    Stuck clutch - oil issue?

I opened up the clutch today and got in there, there's definitely some signs of wear on the splines of the outer cage and the inner.... I don't know what to call the part of the assembly that the steels mesh with. the spindle? anyway, I'm thinking this might be the source of my issue, some of...

    Stuck clutch - oil issue?

Alright, will do! I'm planning to remove the pack anyway to try to knock them loose with a plastic mallet, I'll look over the springs, basket, release mechanism etc. while I'm in there. Thanks!

    Stuck clutch - oil issue?

Actually I just recalled that last fall I had a mechanic look at the bike. I'd forgotten that I had left the oil low when I delivered it so he topped it up, and I have no idea what he used, so the oil I just drained out is probably a substantial mix of who knows what... I think I'm gonna just...

    Stuck clutch - oil issue?

I have a cranky '83 GS1100E which I haven't ridden much because it's having starting issues. The last time I rode it, I went about a mile across city surface streets to move it from my previous home to the place I'm living now. This was about two months ago. Some time after that ride, the clutch...

'83 1100E very hard starting, starter motor switching directions

    1. I did the valves last summer, and later had them re-checked and confirmed by a mechanic, so I'm pretty sure they're fine. 2. I haven't checked for spark on all 4 cylinders, just on maybe 2. 3. I've confirmed that nothing funny seems to be going on with the signal generator timing advance...

Drive sprocket oil leak + damage questions

I have the repair manual linked on BikeCliff's site. I printed it out and stuck it in a binder last year, and I do read it. I guess I haven't found the section where it identified the location of the stator LOL. maybe it's in one of these blurry black-and-white photos that I can't make heads or...

'83 1100E very hard starting, starter motor switching directions

Don- not in the last month, but yes I did a complete tear-down and clean last fall. the bike's been having ignition trouble since before then. I have managed to get it to start once or twice since then with a good dose of luck and some jumper cables, but mostly it just cranks till the battery is...

Drive sprocket oil leak + damage questions

Hi folks, I was poking around in my '83 1100E today, trying to find the source of an engine oil leak. I took off the front sprocket cover for the first time (bought from PO last summer) and found about the worst mess I've ever seen in my life. I cleaned out several cubic inches of fibrous tarry...

'83 1100E very hard starting, starter motor switching directions

Howdy y'all, sorry for the long radio silence, it's been a busy winter for me. I lost my job in November, and I have to do all my work outside so the weather has kept me away from the bike. I've been tinkering with the beast again however, and I have some more data. I tried installing the coil...

'83 1100E very hard starting, starter motor switching directions

I believe CCA is not the issue, just from the response I get from the starter motor when I hit the start. Even if the bike battery were sagging below the required amperage, the marine battery I had hooked up in parallel should have been plenty, it's a little old but its rated at 845 MCA, which I...

'83 1100E very hard starting, starter motor switching directions

Would timing issues cause this? the video linked above is showing the crank being turned by the starter motor, no ignition involved. I didn't see any indication that the ignition timing was firing backwards, though to be fair I can barely get it to fire at all at the moment.

'83 1100E very hard starting, starter motor switching directions

My '83 1100E isn't starting up, and I'm trying to narrow down what might be involved. I observed some weird behavior today while cranking it with the side cover off - the direction of the engine crankshaft occasionally flips in reverse for about a half a rotation before recovering and...

Is the swingarm on my '83 1100E stock?

I'm not certain of that, I thought I was careful to get one off the E but I don't remember what the ebay listing said now haha
