DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Carb Cleaning Vs Rebuild

I am in The Netherlands, bought a 0.75 Gallon/2.8 Liter can years ago for about ?40 per liter. There is a Yamaha product that works well but not like Berryman in my experience. Best stuff i found in 20 years. Expensive, but it will last for many cleanings/years. Always open to alternatives...

    Sync carbs 2 to 3 and 1 to 4 on post 1980 GS1000?

If you have the original exhaust (which has balancing pipes), follow the manual. The balancing pipes cause scavenging so 2 and 3 should be lower. If you have a 4-in-1, set all 4 the same. Valve play should be checked before syncing carbs.

    GS850 - Carb boots

Welcome. The vacuum ports should point down and out. Maybe you swapped the different boots, what happens if you swap 2&3 with 1&4 ? If you bought original boots, there should be an L and R on the boots.

    1981 GSX1100 Katana Based Project

did you remove weight from the clutch cover ? Seeing how far you go to save weight, did you consider a billet clutch cover, or one with a window ? Expensive stuff.

Let's talk about cam walk, baby...

Thanks for that link Ed, Greg mentions 29mm shims .. i forgot about that but happened to me too. Took me a loong time to discover that, and made me check all my shims :distrust:

Let's talk about cam walk, baby...

Buddy of mine worked as a motorcycle mechanic, and on bikes with camwalk he used to check the cams and cam journals. He told me that the cam thickness nearly always was in spec, but the softer aluminium journals usually were on the high end of spec or over. In some cases he was able to lessen...

And the shim plates (ignore the handwriting, incorrect sizes)

Let's talk about cam walk, baby...

There is a Suzuki solution using shim plates. 3 shim sizes were made, still to be found on Ebay. This solution only requires cam modification, no cam cap mods or half moon spacers. This sounds like the cheaper option.

Valve Stem Seals, or maybe throw in the towel

I personally like to install the seals without the valves installed. That way i have a better feel for the oiled up seal, i can feel the seal plop in the valve guide groove. With better feel i mean compared to using pliers. Remove the spring from the seal, oil the valve stem (GS valves do not...

    Different seats on GS models

You missed "mother" ... mine had an oldfashioned sewing machine that was able to handle denim, double folded seams ... vinyl was easy

Larry Pearson replica in the making

Thanks Larry, i love that bike for what it is :D (But my own build will be more conventional like yours)

1 cylinder low compression, or not?

Without. If that squirt of oil raises compression, it's an indication there is an issue with the piston rings not sealing properly. That does not necessarily mean you have a problem : if the bike stood for a long time, the piston rings may be stuck and will usually be freed during the first few...

Larry Pearson replica in the making

absolutely. Mine was not built by me, and if it was not for the history of the bike i would have taken cues to change some things. In one of the articles about Larry his bike they mentioned it all started with a Yoshi pipe. Funny thing is, i am in the same situation. Have a set of the...

GS550 front fork oil seal replacemnt

If you have the front fork disassembled, if you take a hobby burner and heat up the oil seal, it will be very easy to remove with a little nudge from a screwdriver. That way you are sure not to damage the fork legs with prying tools. Mounting the new oil seal can be done without special tools ...

Larry Pearson replica in the making

Copying someone's work is the best flattery :) I just read Mitch Boehm is building a bike very similar to Larry his S. I will be following that thread with great interest. Would be nice if a certain unnamed friend could convince him to do a build thread on GSR ... Link to FB thread ...

    Gs850g

who knows, original engine blew up and replacement did not come with an igniter ? $ may indeed have motivated a simple swap, enabling using the original loom without adjustments ? I do not like electronic ignitions much on these GS-es (GT750 idem), seeing how vulnerable the total environment...

    Gs850g

Chassis number is the only definitive vehicle identification, everything else could have been changed the past 4+ decades. Check these : For the 1979 GS850GN, the chassis numbers start at 100370, 1980 GS850GT chassis start at 116457. So that would confirm your chassis no. 102736...
