I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Looks like a base model GS1000 with the spoke wheels and single front disk brake. Congrats! It will certainly be a labor of love but worth it I think. I had a '78 1000C in college and it was a fantastic machine. Add cleaning the inside of the gas tank to your near-term list of to-dos!

New Coils, no spark at 1 and 4. Narrowed down to CDI (maybe?)

Those Murray carbs are for the birds IMO. People give up on the stock CVs *way* too easily and buy those bastardized Murrays 4-2 things that will never perform as well as a set of clean/stock/tuned stock Mikuni CVs running through an airbox. If you look inside a stock airbox you'll see the...

    Is it worth it?

In my experience a high warmed up idle is also a common symptom of someone turning the throttle stop way up to help a bike with clogged pilot jets start and run when cold (to get a quick sale of an old bike that has sat, or simply out of ignorance). Have seen it numerous times.

Don't swap the airbox for pods, you're going to send yourself down a real rabbit hole. For parts, Suzuki still sells a number of things brand new, I use partshark.com. Sometimes I use partshark.com to get a parts diagram and part number, then will go hunting around ebay for NOS/OEM/genuine...

    89' GN250 to a 82' GS650gl

Welcome! You'll be fine as far as the upgrade in power/size. The 650s are fairly compact bikes, relatively speaking, and have a very friendly/tame throttle response, though you might think it's a total rocketship after a 250 single! As Rich mentioned, the bigger thing to be aware of is giving...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

I've been mulling over the idea of getting a "solid mount" '90s Sportster 1200 for local riding/commuting. My short lived experiment with the '80 Shovelhead Low Rider left me hooked on the whole "potato-potato" thing, but I didn't like having $7000 tied up in what amounted to a fun toy for...

what did you wrench on today??

The last of my "carb" issues on my '78 XS1100E turned out to be ignition issues. Basically, at some point in all of my carb tinkering on the bike this spring, I decided to put new plugs in it (had not messed with the ones that came on the bike as I had received it). Took out a mixed set of...

82 1100e project running finally, idle needs some help

Strongly agree with Rob S. If you confirmed that you have air leaks via some carb spray (I personally like to use an un-lit butane/propane torch to "sniff" around the carbs and boots), that is where you should focus your efforts. Only once you've sorted that out 100% should you be looking at...

    Puzzled !

Based on needing to use ether(?) to get it started and then the leakage, frankly it sounds like the carbs are gumming up (clogged enrichment pickup, sticky float valves). I forget whether the earlier GSes used a vacuum petcock, but over time vacuum petcocks tend to let fuel by into the carbs...

    Speedmoto VM30 Kit

You're probably right, I had taken just a quick look and I should know better, after hunting around for Yamaha XS500 airboxes and carb boots with almost annual changes made by the factory. I would explore some other options like the GS salvage facebook group and calling around some motorcycle...

    Speedmoto VM30 Kit

I agree with Nessism, seems like getting the stock setup to work would be much easier. They're floating all around Ebay for $30-50 it looks like. Certainly cheaper than $350+ for this "racy" VM30 setup IMO.

    Is it worth it?

My single biggest worry is what some other "mechanics" may have done to the carbs. Best case scenario you're likely replacing some crappy off-brand jets. Worst case scenario is some permanently damaged carb bodies and extracting stripped out pilot jets and/or broken off idle mixture screw tips.

    Speedmoto VM30 Kit

VM30 sounds tremendously oversized for a stock GS450 IMO. I think I saw the kit you must have with a google search, I'm wondering how the two carbs are held in sync?

    Oil leak

You've got probably "all of the above" in terms of leaks, like I did with my 1100E when I got it. Tach seal, valve cover gasket, likely a cam chain tensioner (believe it or not that oil can travel towards the front of the engine, in my experience), and yes, a head gasket and/or base gasket...

    Hello (and thanks!) from Wisconsin

When I was working through some carb issues on a GS650G, I was seeking some scary looking low compression readings on cyl 1, but it was all down to cylinder washdown due to a carb issue. Statistically speaking with GS motors, I'd say it's fairly unlikely (not impossible) that you have a "real"...

    New Member - KCMO - GS850G

I've put several sets of Galfer brand lines on and have been very happy with the kits as far as matching the OE lengths and fittings. One thing to be mindful of is it looks like you've got a lower handlebar installed, the kits are generally sized for a direct replacement of the taller OEM...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

that's an incredible collection of dirt bikes. I've never so much as ridden one (DR650 and KLR650 aside), but have always loved the looks of the late 70s-early 90s era of two stroke dirtbikes, the big bores especially.

    New to the GS engine!

Thankfully, unlike the CX500s which as you note have a number of achilles heels, the GS motors are largely quite robust mechanically, their one weak spot is definitely the charging system. Very well documented on this site with ways to update the rectifier/regulator, etc. Thankfully the GS...

    Bike ID Required

To be honest I think you saved yourself a lot of hassle with that thing. Over here in the US that wouldn't even pass as a very good parts bike, let alone something worth restoring. I know there's a a tighter supply of bikes overseas so that may be a vvery US-biased view. Just my $.02

what did you wrench on today??

Finally got this thing running like it should, last little fix is replacing the rear caliper piston, it's too badly pitted to reuse, sourced a new stainless replacement with new seal. Hauling it out to my buddy at the end of this week hopefully.
