A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Scratches inside cylinder head

Thanks Mad. Just went over all of the journals with a fingernail, smooth as a babies bottom. It's my understanding that there's gonna be some scoring, and that this amount is completely normal. With respect, wouldn't a Scotch-Brite pad scratch up the surface?

    Scratches inside cylinder head

Thank you 1980GS1000E. The engine ran pretty well prior to disassembling, so I'm under the impression the scratches were of no significance but, of course, I wanted to get a consensus from the group.

Here's pics of each journal, and the cap in question. They all look fine to me but you guys would know better.

Best way to clean exhaust ports - 79 GS850

Brother, I took it as a lighthearted reminder, and rightly so. I don't think you're the only one who's mentioned my lack of signature since joining the forum...two years ago. And I say "boss" with a wink and a nudge. In other words, thank you for the prodding, intended or not. It's all good :smug:

Best way to clean exhaust ports - 79 GS850

Yeah, that's what I thought. I even went and found a parts fische online to make sure I was right. When I pulled this weird thing out of port one it scared the sh** out of me, I thought I was accidentally pulling part of the head apart, lol. It was coming out like threads that've separated, like...

Best way to clean exhaust ports - 79 GS850

Fair point about my signature, but I did mention the bike I'm working on in the first post in this thread. I'll make sure I fix my signature :) Thanks Rich.

    Scratches inside cylinder head

Hello all. I've got the top end of my 1979 GS850 apart right now. I noticed yesterday that just above where #2 intake valve and springs sits there's some scratches in the cylinder head casing. I didn't really know what to think about it, other than, someone else, at some point, has taken this...

Valve Stem Seals Won't Come Out - Edit: they came out

Yeah Steve, thank you. I was also concerned about that. Seems to have worked though. Couple of very, very small nicks at the top of the guide. I'm not sure if I did that or not.

Best way to clean exhaust ports - 79 GS850

Using a pair of needle nose pliers, pulled this out of #1. That must be the old gasket then, huh?

Best way to clean exhaust ports - 79 GS850

I hope you'll excuse me Steve, I tend to be a bit neurotic when it comes to communication, I just want to make sure I understand. Are you saying not to worry about cleaning the inside? So that is what I'm lookin at there in the pics, the old gasket material?

Best way to clean exhaust ports - 79 GS850

Hello. I currently have the top end of my 1979 GS850G taken apart. I'd like to clean the ports, wondering what the best way to do that is? Here are some pics of the outside of exhaust ports 1 and 4. I'm assuming that all that black crud built up there is old gasket material? Again, what's the...

Valve Stem Seals Won't Come Out - Edit: they came out

Thanks Greg. I used your method and it worked well with one of the remaining two stem seals. The other one though, holy moly! I really had to tear the ever lovin sh** out of it to get it out of there :eek-new: In any event, they're all out now.

Valve Stem Seals Won't Come Out - Edit: they came out

:) Hello all. I'm workin on my 1979 GS850G engine right now, doing a top end rebuild. There are two valve stem seals that will not come out. I'm using a valve stem seal removal tool that worked fine for all the other ones, but as I stated, these last two will not budge. Admittedly the removal...
