A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

I opened up the headlight, to expose the harness. Followed the clutch switch wires, and looped them together (on the main harness side) but still didn't get any sign of life when pressing the starter button. Then shorted out the starter relay with a screwdriver and she cranked over! Threw in a...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

I do have the .pdf of the FSM and wiring diagram. The diagram is a bit low-res, but I think I can decipher it still. Unfortunately I haven't much experience with electrical work, so this type of diagnosis might take me a bit longer than for some... Since ya think I can skip out on the neutral...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

Thanks for the reply! Right now I've got the spark plugs out, and figured diagnosing the starter would be the first step. I'm sure you're right about the carbs being inoperable in their state. The bike is definitely in Neutral, as all the gear lights work (except N), so I can determine it's...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

A brief update on the bike - It's now got fresh oil and filter. The old oil looked to be in decent, in the drainpan. Engine manually turns over Some lights work (1 blinker, gear indicator lights, oil light) Neutral light in center of cluster does not illuminate. Nor does a N show up in the gear...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

That's an extremely generous offer, Charlie! I haven't abandoned hope on the bike yet. The next few days, I'll have some time to work on it a bit more. If I make it past a few milestones, then I'll definitely be reaching out to ya! The last thing I had done before leaving town for a few days...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

Thanks for the input! It's certainly ratty...nearly decomposed! What would you say are some of the high-value parts on a bike in this condition? This was a bike on the CA Coast, so it's bathed in salty air for a few years to say the least. I'll definitely be keeping the 'parts bike' thought...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

I was able to remove the oil cap with locking pliers and heat! Looks pretty dry inside - sight glass looks dark. Are the scratches on the Primary Drive a big red flag?

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

Starting on the disassembly. First slice of good news, the spark plugs weren't siezed/stripped. I pumped in some MMO for a soak... Pulled off the gas tank, and noticed one bolt is broken off in the frame that holds down the tank. Decided I should probably check to see if there's any oil in the...

Wow that's an impressive archive of information. Lots to soak up. Much appreciated!

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

Whelp, I've been looking for a GS550/650 for a first bike, and was able to find one locally for $200... Which now that I think about it, might have been overpriced due to it's shape. Regardless, I still brought it home, thinking it could possibly be revived. It's got 20k on the clock, and was...
