A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    No power?!

How were bike things before this fun started? I’d probably disconnect r/r and stator from harness, then charge battery up and test power at critical points . This diagram should offer clues. http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/images/GS1100G_1982_wiring.jpg

1980 GS400e Manual Spark Advance / Electronic Ignition

This eBay item looks clean…..does it look similar to your setup? https://www.ebay.com/itm/154868101545?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=g3OjUum3QUi&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=ARSR0K5ISZu&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

    Shim Help

Best to have clearance at max or slightly above…..there are two different cam cover gaskets for the 650, so beware. Read this link, especially regarding positioning of cam lobes…..an adjacent lobe wrongly positioned will influence the clearance reading...

    82 gs850g loses spark

“Also, I hope it's obvious, but a wiring problem could absolutely cause this sort of intermittent failure; I wouldn't condemn the igniter until doing a very thorough check and cleaning of every connector and wire, eliminating that accursed stator loop, and making sure the coils and igniter are...

'77 gs750 jetted for pods vm26 fuel screw

I take it by “not firing” you mean that you got known spark, but cylinder ain’t getting hot. Have you replace the head boot o-rings ? Maybe the boots themselves?

    Bogs down at 6000rpm

Either too much air or fuel……135 main jet ? How did you arrive at that…are you running pods?

    1979 GS550L Intake boots replacement

You should post a warning regarding that pic! Any way, this Maine outfit claims to have them, but be suspicious… https://alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm?q=suzuki-bike-parts have you checked eBay for non- OEM versions, you might stumble across them….lots of later models can get a set of 4 for...

    1977 gs750 not charging

Heed Nessism’s short answer. Measuring ohms is inconclusive, cuz when installed in running bike , the stator is tugged and tortured by the spinning magnet field. note that your bike probably has the older 12 pole stator , so make sure you get similar.

    GS650G weight shed

You might be able to monkey with seat and get a 1 inch drop…at the price of comfort! My 650L has a stepped seat that helps a bit. If you opt for shorter shocks. understand that you’re changing driveshaft angle along with less wheel travel. maybe try some boots to give you extra height!

    Very Odd Suspected Ignition Issue

This “while cylinders 1&2 barely took an (mixture) adjustment“ and cold exhaust pipes suggests 1 and 2 are too rich to fire consistently. i d check 1and 2 “choke” plunger positions in “off” spot…compare to 3 and 4 positions in case something got whacked.

GS450 Runs rich at low throttle

“….Perhaps the throttle has been adjusted to compensate for no idlemix supplied. “ Very possible….if carbs were cleaned poorly, a clogged idle system might encourage you to raise idle stop spot as compensation. The bike needs to transition from idle circuit properly.

    1982 GS550 stator problem

The SH-775 is worth hunting for……it spares the stator of useless heat. Try shops that sell/repair ATV’s. The bigger Polaris atv’s had the SH-775 starting about year 2000 or so……lots of these atv critters get wrecked and abused. The 18 pole stator was matched with a 12 pole rotor…6 pairs of N/S...

    Engine Compression Testing

Sure ,check the compression …..but this is a small indication of engine health . This is a plain bearing motor requiring high oil pressure …..depending on how it’s been treated, you could have bearing issues. Any idea of mileage on these two candidates ? My 650 still running fine at 65k miles...

Engine cranking and jumping to 2000 RPM

Did you replace the o- rings at carb boot/ cylinder head interface ? Send a PM to member Nessism…..he might have a working link to his carb rebuild . don’t put off valve checking and adjustment…this is critical.

    '83 GS650L - crazy large reserve?

It’s small tank…maybe 3.3 gal capacity, so you going to be hitting reserve early - 90 miles or two hours running. Plus some petcocks have higher fuel level point where you have to switch over.

Sudden no spark, died while riding. Ignitor substitutes/replacement?

Better slow down…likely have multiple issues on these old critters.Start here with some reading. https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?171846-Top-10-Newbie-Mistakes

    Woes of selling things...

Skip rebuilding…..just get a used eBay starter and swap it in…easy on 850 IIRC. ….and up the price to compensate for your trouble. https://www.ebay.com/itm/334423634927?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=6LYou-9MSz2&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=ARSR0K5ISZu&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

You’ll likely have to get creative….investigate the wire reinforced hoses that lots of folks use in shop dust collection systems.
