A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    I'm an idiot

I'll get testing in the morning. I think my battery may have been a bit duff, but I also have a hard starting problem, that means it takes a while to get going even with a jump start. I did measure voltage across the battery at about 12volts with it running yesterday, when previously it had...

    I'm an idiot

And connected the battery terminals the wrong way around on my '79 GS550 when jump starting from my van. I'm not sure how I managed to do it, and I didn't even stop to think about why it sparked so much when I put it on. :grumpy: I noticed pretty quickly that the something was up, as the jump...

    1979 GS550 Carb Settings

Hello. I've got a set of VM carbs on a '79 GS550, that someone else has cleaned and recalibrated for me. I've got stock airbox, and motad 4:1 exhaust (apparently). The guy that set them up for me wasn't sure what the "factory set petrol screw" (his words) settings were, and says they may...

    Exhaust bolt torque

Thanks for the help guys. I've fixed it now. I started by giving the bolts a bit more of a crank, and discovered that the bolt holes start threading at 19Nm or 1.93kg/m or 168 inch/lbs. So I then took it all off heli-coiled the stripped holes and propped the exhaust up on some brick rather...

    Exhaust bolt torque

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to try refitting it. When I first got it running I remember it smoking from the front end, but then it seemed to go away. But maybe it just reduced. You can't really see the fumes in daylight, but you can smell them. At night you can really see them coming over...

    Exhaust bolt torque

Here is a pic of the internal bits I was mentioning: I noticed on ebay they sell fibre seals. Is that what I'm missing?

    Exhaust bolt torque

THE ANSWER IS 19Nm or 1.93kg/m IS TOO MUCH. I wouldn't recommend going above 1.6kg/m or 11.5ft/lb or 15Nm Hello. I have a '79 GS550. I threaded one of the exhaust manifold bolt holes, so having heli-coiled it, have done them all up pretty gingerly since. The trouble is there are quite a lot of...

    GS550 Handlebars Advice

Hello all. I have a GS550 with what I believe are non-stock handlebars. I believe this to be the case because I had to get a non-stock clutch cable replacement. I have acquired some handlebars from a couple of boxed GS550s and just wanted to check if they are the stock ones. I've attached a...

    Charging system 1979 GS550

No, I haven't cleaned all connections. I wasn't really sure what was what and what to clean. However I'm a lot clearer now, and cleaning all connections everywhere wouldn't do anything but help. I'm in the process of buying SH775 off a forum member, so hopefully cleaning and installing that...

    Charging system 1979 GS550

One more question about the SH775. Is it going to enable to me to add a few accessories onto the bike? I would like to be able to charge a mobile phone (5W), run a sat nav (5W), and run some LED daytime running lights (10W) simultaneously. Ideally having the headlights on at the same time.

    Charging system 1979 GS550

Steve you make a very convincing argument. So in the UK, I have a couple of options on the SH775. Either from italy for ?90, or from China for ?18. I'm thinking there may be a US version as well. Could someone clarify? I'll post ebay links to what is easily available here. P.S My rotor has...

    Charging system 1979 GS550

I have read about the SH775, but I've spent a lot of money on this bike so far, and now need to work with what I've got for a while. There are links to the pics in the original post but I'll attach a pic of the rotor.

    Charging system 1979 GS550

Hello all. I am trying to revive a 1979 GS550, and have made a few posts here as I work my way through the problems. I'm onto the charging system, and have found the stator pages and am attempting to follow it through, but I'm not entirely sure what I've got. The charging system is...

GS550 with new coil relay mod & dyna-s timing + coils is now blowing fuses

Its a 1979 GS. I haven't inspected for grounds, but I will do as soon as I get a chance. I haven't really changed anything apart from the coil mod etc, and am sure none of that is grounding. I think I have eliminated the higher revs as a line of enquiry... Cheers

GS550 with new coil relay mod & dyna-s timing + coils is now blowing fuses

Hello. As the title suggests I have installed the Coil relay mod along with new Dyna-S and coils. I did a very thorough job and covered all connections with heat shrink so nothing should be grounding. However, now its blowing 10A fuses in a circuit for turn signals, brake lights and gear...

    Speedometer not working

Hi there. My speedo doesn't budge, and the rpm meter is sluggish. The cables and drive units are fine. I've been doing some searching and some people refer to info on here about repairing them. Can anyone tell me where i can find it? Cheers

    AGS550 Airbox reinstatement

There is not much mention of the air cleaner in the factory manual. Just a page on how to remove the element. On the babbits website it shows the air cleaner in isolation. Any pics anyone?

    AGS550 Airbox reinstatement

Hey there, I'm resurrecting a 1979 GS550, that the came with pods on. They are prety knackered and it doesn't run that well. I am going to take it back to an airbox. I've bought one, nd it seems to have quite a few things mounted to it judging by the amount of bolt holes. Can anyone post...

    1979 GS550 Carbs

The throttle linkage is between 3 and 4 and the 47020 stamped on the carb rack seems to refer to GS550 carbs. But the internal diameter at the outlet is about 3mm to big. Odd...

    1979 GS550 Carbs

Hi there. I'm in the process of resurrecting a 79 GS550. I've got my local garage to help me out with the carbs, as it had pods on it and wasn't running very well (sooty plugs). We are attempting to take it back to stock (airbox/original jet sizes etc). The guy at the garage reckons the carbs...
