A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Tarting up my engine

Hello all. I'm restoring a 1979 GS550, and am wondering about how the engine would have originally been treated. The bottom end is in fairly good nick and I think is original (matt aluminium colour), and I'm thinking i'll leave it as is having cleaned it. I am getting the head and side covers...

    GS550 Engines differences

So, would all the valves and pistons be a match between a 1979 engine and a 1980 engine assuming neither of them have been rebored?

    GS550 Engine rattle

Thanks for the input. I am considering an engine swap but at present I have only found a later engine to swap and not the carbs, exhaust & airbox to go with it. I've tried all the breakers within 100 miles of Bristol. Does anyone have a spare engine??? In the meantime I'm going to continue...

    GS550 Engines differences

Hello everyone. I've got a '79 GS550 with an engine that is in a bad way. I've put another thread up about my engine woes, but I am wondering about whether I can fit a later engine? My brother-in-law just happens to have a spare engine in the 199xxx engine number range which i think makes it...

    GS550 Engine rattle

The rocking it a bit method freed it up a bit, but it only seems to go half a turn forward and then it has to go backwards to go forwards again...Argghh I made a little video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7wLcN4CW8c&t=3s

    GS550 Engine rattle

I've got the camshaft back on, and measured the valve clearances. They were as follows: Exhaust A >>0.03mm >.0.05mm B >0.3mm >0.05mm Intake C >0.03mm >>0.03mm D >0.1mm >>0.03mm >0.05 means I could get the 0.05 feeler gauge in, but it was a bit snug and didn't go in or out cleanly...

    GS550 Engine rattle

Hello again. So I've had the bike apart today, and found that the chain was 6 places out of alignment. It should be 20 between points 2 & 3 but it was 26. Here is a link to me turning the engine over at this point and there was a bit of a jumpy thing going on...

    GS550 Engine rattle

Thanks for the input. I'll have a look in more detail tomorrow, but it does look like the camshaft alignment is out. This is my first time inside the engine, so excuse the possibly stupid questions: How do you go about manipulating the alignment? I'm guessing you slacken off the chain so its...

    GS550 Engine rattle

I was on my way back home yesterday when my '79 GS550 started making a funny rattly noise. I stopped and had a little look, and it seemed to be coming from the engine. As I was late and about 20miles from home I decided to press on. The rattle was worse at low rev's and it seemed to go away at...

Coil Relay Mod with Dyna Ignition

Been having some problems with getting my 79 GS550 to start periodically as the plugs keep sooting up. My first port of call is the ignition system, so I've splashed out on Dyna ignition, coils and am going to have a go at the coil relay mod for good measure. I discovered this page on...

    K&N airpods

Sorry for the slow reply, got swamped with things less interesting but more pressing that fixing up an old bike : ) Thanks for all the info. In light of it I bought some of these filters: https://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/product.aspx?prod=RC-0844 I'll attach a photo of the current set up...

    K&N airpods

I've bought a 1979 GS550 which has some airpod type airfilters on. They need replacing as they are kind of falling apart & I was thinking of getting some fancy K&N ones. However the ones K&N recommend on their website for the bike won't fit onto the outer (1 & 4) intakes, as the frame gets in...

    Sticking Clutch 1979 GS550

I think the problem is to do with the clutch rod. I removed the clutch rod, which was a two part arrangement. I have access to a younger GS550 engine (my brother in law has a spare), and its clutch rod was a one piece arrangement. I've attached a photo This shows the clutch rod that came out of...

    Sticking Clutch 1979 GS550

So i got hold of a new (old) clutch basket and that doesn't seem to have made any difference. I'm thinking the problem might be in the orifice where the the clutch rod (which isn't bent) slides. Is there a good way of cleaning that out? Everything else on the bike was fairly gummed up, so I...

    Sticking Clutch 1979 GS550

The clutch rod isn't obviously bent, as I've had it out. I will check again against a ruler or something. I think the mechanism that pushes the rod is fine. It was completely seized, but I took it into the local garage, and they freed it up.

    Sticking Clutch 1979 GS550

Hello everyone. I'm trying to resurrect a 1979 GS550 with little experience. Its been off the road for 5 years. I've got the engine running, freed the brakes up, but the clutch is sticking. It does this thing where the clutch sticks. When you pull the clutch lever it moves but gets stuck...
