Base gasket surface sealing after prev.owner gasket scraping ...?

I'm putting together a budget GS750/850 engine here out of the best used parts I have without visiting a machine shop to get cylinders bored etc. The cylinder I picked out of my 4 or so 850 jugs honed up really nicely & got rid of a few vertical score marks & rust stains without taking it much...

Potential Group Purchase - Wiseco GS650 741cc pistons

One big argument I see here for the WIseco piston vs these, is that these state that they're a different design than the OEM pistons. I see waaaayyyy less quench area there, perhaps they are more like the 550 pistons in this regard? I'd really like to have a set of these in my hands to see what...

Potential Group Purchase - Wiseco GS650 741cc pistons

EDIT - DO NOT BUY THESE! THEY DO NOT FIT A 650 HEAD! So this big bore 550/650-740cc mod just got a lot cheaper... I had seen these last year on eBay, but being that the Wiseco are higher compression and able to run aftermarket camshafts (deeper valve pockets), I hadn't said much about the...

Has anybody ever had their GS1100GL (or other 8V) head ported?

Hmmm...this sounds tempting! I'm looking for everything I can have done or do myself to make a GS400/425 big bore engine really scream, yet still not such extensive porting or large cam that it's a race-only high-rpm-only engine... I assume the old 8V engines would have the same type of small...

Sound of a Delkevic 4:1 - A few people asked for this

Yes, as he stated, the baffle is completely removable. They sound very aggressive with the baffle even, however - I would not recommend removing! Especially if you go with the megaphone style. On the upswept road race style, perhaps you could just remove the packing out of the baffle and put the...

    Frame bracing, boxing vs tubing.

Good thread, subscribing. I need to do this to my 750 this year... Will definitely be doing tgis extensively to my GS400 489cc track bike this year.

Sound of a Delkevic 4:1 - A few people asked for this

Depends on the engine setup, & the pipe... larger smoothbore carbs make it noticeably louder, as do K&N air filters... My main point is that the megaphone style muffler can has a HUGE baffle opening, like 37mm iirc, whereas the straight diameter upswept roadrace style has a much smaller baffle...

Sound of a Delkevic 4:1 - A few people asked for this

I loooooovvvvvveeeee Delkevic... Their pipes are AWESOME... Vance & Hines stopped selling the standard road (non-drag-bike) pipes for our bikes shortly after the stainless steel Delkevics came out for only $50 or so more initially than the chromed steel V&H... I wondered if Delkevic's quality &...

More modern cartridge fork options - retaining GS wheels & proper/revised geometry

I have the privilege of checking out some of the Yamaha R6 RSU 43mm forks in person at the local Japanese bike salvage yard when I was investigating fork options, and I determined quickly that they were the lightest of all of the fork offerings I was looking at. Very impressive! I very high...

More modern cartridge fork options - retaining GS wheels & proper/revised geometry

Revisiting this for some of my upcoming project bikes... I now have a round column Vertical Mill, Enco 29, similar to the RF 30 and RF31 newer models, & a rotary turntable, adjustable boring head, etc for it... I am looking at buying some 4 or 4.5" x 2.5" thick 6061 T651 aluminum bar stock &...

    What GS camshafts are interchaingeable?

Yes, just like the 1000G/1100G models, same cams, various cam sprockets year by year, altering the timing, searching for more low-mid grunt.

    What GS camshafts are interchaingeable?

Bill, I failed to mention that running GS550 cams would be better than 650 cams if you are wanting an engine that will rev out really high. The 650 cams are a great street grind, 550 cams are like the early GS400 425 and 750 cams, longer duration slightly less valve lift, better for high RPM Of...

    What GS camshafts are interchaingeable?

I figured I would start small and try to build a really fast lightweight little twin, keep me out of the liter bike trouble as far as the speed potential! Keep it safer at first, I love taking bikes on the tightest twisty roads anyhow, so if I did decide I only want you to race bigger bikes...

    What GS camshafts are interchaingeable?

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is a WERA/AMA joint event as far as the Vintage racing is concerned. It is not nearly as well attended as Barber Vintage Festival in terms of road racing grids, Barber is three times the amount of racers. But the AMA is a much bigger event overall, especially for...

    What GS camshafts are interchaingeable?

No, WERA is definitely not dead! Some vintage classes are not well attended on the grids, but V5, V6, & V7 are. V5 would be 650cc & up in terms of bikes of our interests. V7 is newer late 1980's/early 1990's. V3 & 4 are smaller 2 strokes and small-medium twins. Vintage classes run only at the...

    What GS camshafts are interchaingeable?

His track bike project has Fox Factory Shox, Dymags mag wheels, S model fairing, & 37mm GS forks. Engine is stock for now. It looks real nice. It was sitting like that, abandoned at a motorcycle shop, for years, sold off on mechanics' lien rights. We're hoping to get 5 of us out doing track...

    Fork options

∆∆∆ what he said! Unless your fork tubes are in bad shape with any rust pitting or gouges or damage in the seal travel area between the dust boots and the triple clamps... going with any other major fork upgrades like a cartridge fork will require some custom machining to fit your 15mm GS axle...

    Ideal air/fuel ratio?

And you might need to be even richer at idle, but you don't want to be that rich at low throttle cruising, which is also dictated by the pilot circuit. The air cooled engines run much hotter and have different requirements than water cooled engines. Leaner means hotter also. On gasoline engines...

    What GS camshafts are interchaingeable?

Precisely, 750 & up 8 valve are all the same general specifications and interchangeability. 550 and 650 are the same but 650g sprockets do not work on the chain drive 650e and 550 engines. as mentioned, megacycle has several available grind patterns in their catalog. Web cams does also. Both...

Jetting suggestions for VM22s on 740 kit?

A 22 mm carb on a high flowing engine will give you great low and response, but your top end power will be severely limited... It may even run severely a rich due to the extremely high air velocity through the small carb. A bit of a restriction...
