I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    4k Engine Rattle

Thanks for the input chaps. I'll check the filter. I have balanced the carbs not that long ago, but I have had them off again since, so they could probably do with being balanced again. I think I install the tensioner correctly. I followed the instructions in the service manual. There is a...

    4k Engine Rattle

Hello all, I have a 79 GS550, on which I recently rebuilt the engine (bored cylinders & oversized pistons). Valves clearances were checked and adjusted. Cam chain timing is right. Problem is I get a rattle at about 4k revs. Initially, it only really did it if you gave it a quick twist in...

Charging System Quick Test Results and Queries

Thanks for the input. thanks for the input. Firstly another question: how long should a good battery hold a charged voltage. Say you get it home from a ride and it reading 12.8V Should it read the same 24hrs later? In response to the above points: My readings are probably around 0.2V...

Charging System Quick Test Results and Queries

Hello. I've got a 1979 GS550 that has been having some charging problems. I've replaced the original R/R with a SH775 bought from forum member Nessism and cleaned up / replaced terminals in the charging circuit but not the whole electrical system. I've fitted Dyna-S ignition and done the...

    1979 GS550 Carb Settings

I did adjust the carbs. The cold starting problem also seems to have cured itself, with nothing more than a little razz down the motorway.

    1979 GS550 Carb Settings

Thanks for the input. I think it is worth posting this issue to a new thread with a video, and more details of what I've done. I've had a look at the Top 10 newbie mistakes and i feel i'm in the clear for those. Will look through the other thread. I'm guessing its probably to do with the...

    1979 GS550 Carb Settings

Thanks. I'll look into it. I've had the carbs rebuilt and thoroughly cleaned and had them tuned as mentioned above and it's had this problem since then (I rebuilt the engine at the same time). I'm presuming the choke is working alright as when it does warm up it really starts to rev hard on...

    1979 GS550 Carb Settings

What is the effect of taking these screws further out? At the moment my bike is very hard starting, but once it gets going it runs nicely. It takes a few minutes of holding the starter on, full choke and it firing but not running on its own before it runs very weakly, and eventually strengthens...

1979 GS550 Engine Randomly Seized Up

There was a bit of spark plug wedge down the side of the piston. It's dented the cylinder : ( On the bright side least the guy who buggered it up is a machinist who is going to re-sleeve the cylinder, and put right whatever damage may have been done to pistons and valves and not charge me for...

1979 GS550 Engine Randomly Seized Up

He blew some air down the hole in the spark plug (it'd pulled right out and left a tiny hole where the wire goes through it to the bottom of the plug) before drilling, and summised that as he couldn't hear any air blowing down the exhaust or into the engine that valves were closed. He didn't...

1979 GS550 Engine Randomly Seized Up

Hello all. I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on my latest quandary: I've recently rebuilt the engine in this 79'GS550 (oversized pistons/bored out cylinders (not by me) /serviced cam chain tensioner / reseated valves, adjusted shims), and it's been running well, but I've only...

Kinked petlock vacuum hose / fuel on floor

Sorry, I should have specified. 1) GS550 1979 VM Carbs 2) I've had the carbs rebuilt by my local bike shop. The guy there is really knowledgeable about old Japanese bikes and restores them himself. When I bought the bike it had some cheap pods on, but he advised me to change it back to stock...

Kinked petlock vacuum hose / fuel on floor

I'm not having an awful lot of luck. Or I know so little that I'm sequentially making every mistake possible. Anyway a few threads down the list is one of me having left my carbs in Prime and finding fuel all over the floor and in the oil. So I changed the oil and got it going, and left them...

Left '79 GS550 Carbs in Prime

Thanks for all the input guys. I've changed the oil and got it going again. When I saw the carbs overflowing it was only coming from two of them. I was told when it's in prime it might take the fuel from the reserve feed, and so could have picked up a bit of crap that was stopping the needles...

    Speedometer question

Hello I have a '79 GS550 on which the speedo is dead, and the rev-ometer very laggy. I haven't tried a new drive unit, but Have tried a new cable. When I turn the wheel the drive in the cable turns so I presume it must be the speedo. I've found a matching one on eBay, that allegedly works...

Left '79 GS550 Carbs in Prime

Hello all. This is becoming a theme recently of me asking for help with idiot mistakes I've made, so I thank you in advance. So I recently rebuild my engine and just got it all back together and put the carbs back on and put the petlock PRIME position before starting the engine. As the title...

What electrical connectors do you use?

My local auto shop sells really crap crimp connectors, that don't crimp that well. Can anyone suggest anything good? I'm wondering if there is any reason not to use Wago connectors. These are fairly new type of connector that electricians use instead of the screw down connectors. They are dead...

    I'm an idiot

Can anyone explain this in a bit more detail? What results should i be looking for? I remember the stator tests, where you test for resistance between the different legs, and should get a reading around 2 ohms. Also check none of the legs are grounding to the engine body. Mine still seems fine.

    I'm an idiot

I'm not sure exactly what this means. I remember the stator tests. You Ohm testeach leg of the stator against the other two, and should get a reading around or less than 2 ohms. And test none of them are shorting to ground. My stator still passes these tests. Could someone explain the R/R...
