A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Steering stem removal and replacement

That's what I meant - I suspect that while they're not totally shot, they're entering the right-hand side of the bathtub curve, where they degrade in strange and unpredictable ways. I don't see much point in inspecting the bearings since it seems getting to the inspection point is about 75% of...

    Steering stem removal and replacement

tldr: Checked. Didn't see the classical signs of worn bearings (though some concerning quirks did emerge). Even though the front-end adjustment appeared to be precisely correct, I ran back through it and seemed to alleviate symptoms. Still ordered what I need to change the bearing. I finally...

    Steering stem removal and replacement

I'll know pretty soon if that's the case, but I doubt it. This is a worsening of symptoms that have been at the "barely noticeable" level up until recently. Or maybe I just have a higher standard after putting a few thousand miles into the bike and getting over the euphoria of it not exploding...

    Steering stem removal and replacement

I'm fairly sure I've isolated the problem to the front (less sure about yet pessimisticly leaning towards specifically the steering bearings), but I'll give the rear a shake before I jack the front up.

    Steering stem removal and replacement

Hi all! With the warmer weather and a little more riding, the smokification of my oil mentioned in a previous post has calmed down enough to be kicked down the road to winter. Now I have a new problem: the front end seems to be getting mighty squirrelly, and I swear it's due to some...

Are these exhaust connectors right for a 81 650G?

Trying to source a couple "exhaust connectors" (the slip-in gaskets that go in the 2 & 3 pre-crossover pipes) for my bike. Searching the part number (14771-47020-H17) finds a whole lot of Partzilla type stores where they're either out of stock or "estimated to ship in 2 weeks" (so out of stock...

81 Suzuki GS650G - oil pressure light flickering on hard stop - marginal pressure?

For my legions of fans who are no doubt waiting with bated breath for an update: 1100 miles later and this never happened again. The oil light turns off with the starter now. No sign of any damage whatsoever and I've been through a filter and oil change since.

Valve oil seals & the rope trick - any detailed guide on disassembly order?

Thanks for the heads up, I hadn't caught that reading through the manual (but it makes sense now that I think it through). The base gaskets and o-rings are much cheaper than the head gasket, but the extra minimum workload for a correct-sided valve disassembly makes the effort and prep for a...

Valve oil seals & the rope trick - any detailed guide on disassembly order?

Thanks, I searched but didn't find anything nearly as comprehensive as that.

Valve oil seals & the rope trick - any detailed guide on disassembly order?

Long story short, my '81 GS650G has started spitting quite a bit of white-blue oil on cold starts out of one exhaust pipe. The amount of smoke is roughly proportional to how long it's been sitting (and the sidestand makes it worse), I haven't noticed any loss in power or roughness, and there's...

81 Suzuki GS650G - oil pressure light flickering on hard stop - marginal pressure?

I park the bike on the center stand when I check the oil. I might be wrong about how long it takes to refill; there's definitely *some* oil visible about a minute after stopping, but it takes longer to refill. I'll time it just to get some baseline measurements. If I have to crank the starter...

81 Suzuki GS650G - oil pressure light flickering on hard stop - marginal pressure?

Hi all. Took my newly resurrected bike out for the first long-ish (~100 mi round trip) since I dealt with the ignition issues. On two occasions I saw, as I braked semi-hard to a stop, the oil pressure light flicker on, off, on again, and then off again inside the blink of an eye. I say...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

That price is doable, but I'm a little concerned about buying NOS rubber vs repops; rubber degrades over time whether or not it's installed, though it being out of the sun slows down the process. The bigger thing is: I don't exactly know what's wrong with the #2 boot! It's not hard or anything...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I didn't want to update too fast -- I've already pulled a Bush Jr. and declared mission accomplished way too soon once. But it's been over a week and a few dozen miles since I've done anything to the bike so I feel comfortable it's fixed. I owe it to future forum trawlers following in my...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

What do you mean in reference to the mains? I don't think I posted my specs here and I'd have to hunt down the notebook I wrote them down in, but IIRC the mains were the default (110).

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Well, looks like this chapter of my journey can be entered in the comedic annals of "foolish novice mechanic catastrophizes, pessimistically declares sky is falling" rather than the much sadder book of "foolish novice mechanic trusts buyer too much, optimistically buys lemon he then can't...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I tried a spritz of WD40 (I know, I know, but I had no starting fluid on hand, and also I'll take a little solvent action over starting fluid blowing a valve if I get heavy handed) in one intake (carb->engine). Nothing. I tried a spritz of WD40 in one cylinder (not the same one I tried the...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I've tried every combination of choke, throttle, and idle speed I can think of. I'll try blocking the airbox today. I can't really find any good information on how wet a wet plug should be. Should I be looking for 'soaked' or 'slightly damp'? How long do I have before it evaporates off? If I...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Hmmm, I don't think that's possible. When I timed the ignition that would have shown up in big blazing letters. The 1-4 coil (white) went high when it was supposed to (aka when I turned the advance mechanism with the advancer pointed at the full-advance mark). I did swap wires around in the...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Posting this from beside the bike. Furious and fed up. Retimed. All is working on the ignition side (the spark looks on the weak side but it's there - edit:maybe weak enough to not work under compression? might have the timing advanced slightly too far ahead or some weak connections). Still...
