If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Installed (but didn't hook up - waiting on delivery of a better three-way solution than the horrible guillotine junction that comes with) the dyna today. Three points, one for posterity, one also a little for posterity (but also to check if I did things right), and one just for me. 1. I *did*...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I've kinda crossed the rubicon on the new ignition. Even if I turned back now, I think I wouldn't be confident in the bike until I did do the swap. Wish the kit was already adapted for this particular model, as I'm not looking forward to cutting the baseplate and working the oil pressure switch...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Well, except a $200 ignition if it blows ;) Jokes aside I think the charging system is in a good state right now. The quick test I did before this all got real bad was well within spec. The reg/rec is definitely aftermarket, and I think the stator is too. That points towards a possible...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Alright, took the proper tests and I think I found my smoking gun igniterwise. Measurements on the power side look similar to last time. On the ground side, the black/yellow ground-side was dropping about 1.78V, but I found that the white (1-4) cable was dropping 11+ volts. I pushed the white...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Ah, I (think I) see -- I was wrong about the O/W ignition switch wire being the 'ground' side; it is the positive/'power' side of the ignition coil. The white and black/yellow wires are the 'ground' side. Which means that: (meter positive) on battery positive terminal to (meter negative) on O/W...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

The manual is very squirrelly about which side is positive which side is negative on each ignition coil circuit. I didn't find anything when I scoured, and in any case the coils themselves are unmarked. I assume the killswitch is drain to ground, but I figured I'd just measure each possible...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

No progress, but a clue. Finally got a dry free hour to install the new coils - hadn't had a chance since I came home from my weekend trip. Resistances on primary and secondary measure good. The battery is still strong. Right off the charger it read 13.3V, which dropped to 13.1 when I had the...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I'm pretty certain there is no problem with the carb (very recently cleaned and rebuilt, and it was pretty spotless to start with), and I am 100% certain there is something wrong with the coil. I've tried every combination of cap, igniter lead, cylinder, and plug (I'm *not* using the...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I checked the primary and secondary resistances on the old coils, all were comfortably within spec (which is why it took me so long to settle on them as the culprit). I've only checked the secondary resistances on the new coils, which were both on spec (even the one with the bad lead). I'll...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

...spoke too soon I think. Replaced the valve cover gasket and tried to fire it up. Nothing. After way too much tinkering I found no spark on the righthand HT lead of the left coil. Problems persist when I swap which coil gets which line from the igniter, so pretty sure it's isolated to the...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

And final update, for the zero people still concerned: took it on a ride and it works beautifully under load! Now I just need to replace the geriatric valve cover gasket (finally gave up the ghost and started spitting oil properly) with the silicon one I've had in a bag for a couple weeks.

Patriot Racing Industries brake line kits

Anyone bought from them before? Have anything good or bad to say? Specifically looking at this kit for the front of my 650G. $110 shipped is an attractive price for precut lines and banjo bolts all in one.

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Good news: think I've fixed it. Bad (or funny, or expected) news: it was probably the coils all along. The new battery got here yesterday. Charged it up and threw it on after work. At first it just sputtered like when I used the jump pack, but some fiddling with idle speed and I got it to fire...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I was sticking the screwdriver into a plug cap and jumping the spark to a fin on the engine. I had to get it a hair's breadth from touching to get any spark. Anecdotally, I grabbed the screwdriver the wrong way the first time and grounded it to *me*. It was a shockingly dull shock, a slight...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

The linked thread mentions that I'll "need to run another wire down to the ignition for switched 12v power for the pickups"; the way it was phrased makes it sound like it's another thing you have to do differently on the 650.

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

The plate mod looks easy enough. Anywhere where I could find more details on running the extra 12V wire? That makes it sound like I'll need to modify or source a different grommet if things come to the new-ignition stage.

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

On the topic of the Dyna S: does this fit/work on the 650? I've seen that same list of "550/750/850/1000" elsewhere and the 650 is always absent.

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Short update today: put the carbs on. Bad start to its return - since it won't start. Doesn't sound like it's even trying - shockingly similar to the "tricky start" I was experiencing before all this happened. I obviously immediately suspected the carbs I'd just stripped and rebuilt, but I'd...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Last time I ran it in neutral (about a week ago, before I pulled the carbs - I describe it in more detail in post #10) it'd get up to 4k or 5k at ~1/3 throttle and kind of asymptote there - rev strong for the first couple k, start slowing down, rev no faster past 1/3, and die (clean - without...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I'm now thinking (perhaps wishfully) that it revving "to the moon" was an overstatement by me. At the beginning of this process I wasn't recording or paying a ton of attention to either revs or throttle position in neutral, so it's possible I was giving it much less throttle than I thought, and...
