A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

gs550d camshaft sprocket plastic chipped + cam chain guide cracked

Surface cracking of the plastic coating comes with age. The plastic is moulded over a steel core AFAIK. Cut a bad one up to check. i've only had a tensioner blade break up - in a race twin. The guy who had it on loan had ignored a loose camchain and the slap on over-run eventually broke it. He...

Engine tick/tapping noise only taking off in gear

Check the clutch again. Sounds like the noise occurs as the load is taken up. Which may point to the cush drive in the back of the clutch. You may have partially collapsed springs in there. Not uncommon on high mileage motors.

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Notches are probably identifiers for semi-skilled labour on the assembly line. Before assembling the box, check the endfloat on the shift drum. If that is excessive it can put load on the circlips between gears. Should be only just discernable movement - about 003- .005 in.

Is the clutch sleeve or inner hub supposed to move on the axle?

You're talking about the male and female splines on shaft and hub. If at some time the clutch nut has come loose the aluminium hub may have damaged splines. Not a lot you can do about that except find a hub in better condition.

Is the clutch sleeve or inner hub supposed to move on the axle?

Excessive endfloat on well used examples is quite common. It can be shimmed to get the endfloat down to .003-.005in. If you don't wish to use a very thin shim, the back of the hub can be machined to use a thicker one. Alternatively, the hardened sleeve in the center can be shortened. This...

    Oversize piston rings

Pistons and rings. There's a good chance that the rings aren;t too bad - but the ring grooves wear. Excessive side clearance will make smoke. Many possible reasons for smoking as you know. Valve stem seals are the point to start looking.

    Pirelli tire bead issue

Fair enough, plenty of effort. Back in the day here in NZ, a couple of sidecar racers used to help finance their season by selling tyre lube they'd made themselves, Under the brand name "Bear Snot" It smelled foul. Memorably bad.

    Pirelli tire bead issue

Back when the Dunlop 591 came out, that was one of the first bias ply touring tyres. Working in a shop which mainly sold tyres, I saw a lot of effort go in to beading them up. Pressures as high as 90psi were sometimes needed - even lubed.

gs550d tachometer drive on the camshaft stripped

Nothing there will bend straight - it's cast iron which will simply break. Looks to me like someone put the cam in and got the tacho drive crossed up. Usually they self-align but sometimes not. I'd use the cam as is. IMO there's enough worm drive left to drive the tacho OK. A repair is...

gs550d camshaft sprocket plastic chipped + cam chain guide cracked

Cam sprocket, no probs, reuse. When making them adjustable, I machine all the plastic off anyway. Are you saying the front camchain guide and the tensioner blade are both cracked/split ? I'd see if I could find a set of good secondhand ones. In my experience that sort of damage is not common..

    GS450 to 500 swap questions

Yes, that stuff looks like it would work. Yes, valve clearances shimmed correctly. Turning it over quietly by hand and not forcing it if things hit is safe. If material has to be removed from the piston crowns, it's best done in a mill.

    GS450 to 500 swap questions

Once the bottom end is together, mock up the top end. You only need one piston in for a trial assembly.Don't even need rings or pin circlips on it. Don't torque the head down, just a light nip. Plasticine in the valve pockets or at least on the piston crown under the valves. Time up the cams as...

    GS450 to 500 swap questions

There's no definitive answer about valve to piston clearance. This is because all the parts you are going to use will be already used and the head for instance may have been machined. The safe way is to mock up the top end on the motor with plasticine on the piston(s) and turn it over by hand...

    GS1100E bad timing chain replacement

No. In my experience there's not enough room or slack in the chain to do it with cams still in place. Unless you've got suspect threads in the head removing the cams isn't a problem.

    UK GS400B - rivetcounter's question

I suspect that model came out in the UK with a metal chainguard - then someone at the agent's reminded them you have salted roads. Hence the plastic guard. Around the same period here in NZ, some came with chrome chainguards, some painted, and some plastic. Depended which supplier had filled...

GSXR "DOT" head on my GS1100

I was building the 750's with that head for both roadracing bikes and speedway TQ's. The TQ's are fairly heavy vs a bike and single gear on a 1/4 mile oval. You soon learned what worked. When the GSXR 750's came out most tuners thought the very wide LC's of the aircooled 16V engines were the way...

GSXR "DOT" head on my GS1100

I see the cams you've got go in on 103/105 LC's. That'll work fine. My 104/104 gives a slightly wider power band but uinless you dyno it you'll never notice.

    1981 GS550 Dyna S Help

The centrifugal advancers can be moved on the crank and advance with RPM. Where it's electrical advance, that is built into the ignition box - electronically. And the trigger piece on the crank end is fixed in position

Dimensions front sprocket cover mounting holes GSX1100

Best IMO to make it a two piece setup. Plate spaced out as far as you need - and a bolt - in bearing carrier. 3 bolts with the carrier slotted. Once in place drill for another bolt with no adjustment. I'd also tie the base plate back to the frame as 6mm screws into the engine case won't carry...

    Oil cooler bits leaking

So it appears to be leaking from the male/female tapers visible in your pic ? It appears to me that there's a ridge been impressed into the male taper where it overlaps the center hole. Not a lot you can do about that except find another male taper piece. It may be possible to take the cooler...
