DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Incorrect Timing mark on EX Cam

Is the exhaust cam seated properly down into the bearings ? It almost looks as though the caps haven't been tightened down. If everything is down the marks look close enough to me. Where in NZ are you ?

    Vintage Racing a 78, GS1000

No low sides. His brother did have one enormous high-side on them though. Nearly as talented a rider - just got unlucky with a sudden throttle response. From memory i was putting an additional plate in the clutch. Done clutch work at the track like that many times before. If you're careful it...

    Vintage Racing a 78, GS1000

Yep, that's me - and it's old history now. That was in the early stages of the bike's development. Wider 17in rims, better frame bracing, bigger valves - stainless, bigger carbs - 33 Keihin CR's. Slightly higher lift cams with TI retainers and 10mm OD shims under stock buckets ground flat. And a...

Lack of Oil // Cylinder Head // One Side only

Most likely the oil passages around the LHS barrel studs are blocked. This side is more prone to it due to the angle of the sidestand. It's a strip down to the cases to clear everything out - and it may be hard to get the barrel off too.

GS550e "interesting" ignition problem - dies when coils are hot

Ok, I'd suspect that the Dyna is voltage sensitive - where points aren't. From experience with them on race bikes using total loss battery power, we've run as low as 9.9V measured post race. But restarting at that level wasn't even tried. A fresh battery might just solve all your problems...

    o rings between head studs?

It's quite feasible to use separate O rings in those corner holes. An O ring which will "just fit" in the gasket hole and is slightly thicker than the gasket is what's wanted. Measure the gasket thickness which may be .040 or 1mm approx. A common thickness O ring size is 1.2mm which will work...

GS550e "interesting" ignition problem - dies when coils are hot

You've had the tank off and on doing this work and checking. Check that the fuel lines and breathers are all correct - incl the vacuum line to the tap. Next i would pull the caps off the HT leads and ohm them.

    GS1000 weekend racer...

You'll hear when it's time to do it again. They get very noisy at idle.

    GS1000 weekend racer...

Get the springs and rivets, do the existing basket, use till it has to be done again. It's worth sourcing a spare complete basket and taking it with you to the races along with the tools needed for a trackside replacement.

Anyone else excited about the start of MotoGP season?

Suzuki's involvement in racing has always been sponsor dependent. Money's tight at the moment so it's not really that much of a surprise.

    performance camshafts

The clutch basket is the weak link - even on shafties. Megacycle used to list cams for the 550. Any of their grinds would be suitable. Use 110 degree lobe centers inlet and exhaust.

    performance intake mod

Not neccessarily. If there's less intake vacuum - for whatever reason - then jets will need to go up. Sharpy's big K&N used with the front of the stock airbox on GS1000'a does work. Side benefit is quicker access to the battery.

    No coasting going on here

Couple of times towards the end of the lap he looks to be well off line and you cringe....then the road goes the way you didn't expect and he's spot on line for that. Real roads, lol, the obvious secondary roads in the lap still have the occasional agricultural residue visible. Just like here...

    Filing down Clutch hub/basket grooves

I'd doubt if you could stop distortion happening. Not really feasible.

    Megacycle camshafts???

The "small" Web grinds are done without welding - out of the stock cam lobes. This does limit the amount of lift achievable but is cheaper. Ok for mild street motors. There is a point where to keep correct geometry with the rockers when using very big lifts that the base circle should be made...

    Megacycle camshafts???

I've used their cams in a lot of roadrace engines over the years. Quality has always been good in my experience.Would use again.

    Rebuild clutch basket GS1000E

Personally, I don't remove the rivets. When the backplate goes back on, a rosette weld in the original hole works quite well. I don't think it greatly matters which way up that washer is - witness marks might tell you which way it has been previously. Yeah, all the spring recesses go like that...

Is the 1980 16 valve GS1100L Hard to Find?

The GSX 16valve - or more correctly 4 valve per cylinder - carries right across the capacity range. GS - 2-valve - and GSX - 4 valve versions came in 250 and 400 twins. 550 and 750 fours too. The 650 and 850 fours only had 2 valve per cylinder versions. I think the US market 16V GS700 is the...
