A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    1979 GS1000 Oil control problem

Probably stem seals, yes, but the extra oil from those will possibly have added to any bore glazing. I'd budget on deglazing the bores while the head's off.

    Just asking

Okay....There's an easy - but not cheap - 115 - 120 RWHP available from a GS1000. Big bore Wisecos, mild cams, Mikuni RS34/36 carbs, Dyna ignition and a tidy head job. A prperly built reinforced clutch basket is essential.Put together properly and used sensibly this is quite streetable and will...

    Gearbox issues - shift forks?

I'd be more likely to suspect worn clutch components giving excessive endfloat. I've seen this cause shifting problems. Easy enough to pull the clutch cover and start pulling and pushing on the clutch basket to see how much endfloat there is. It's possible - though unlikely - the rails the forks...

    1978 suzuki gs550e cam question

Megacycle listed them for years and would probably still do a set.

    GS 1000 gaskets

Despite there being quite a lot of anti -Athena feeling on here, they seem to be the only gasket makers prepared to make for obsolete brands and models. For most of the older Italian brands - eg Benelli, laverda - they are now and have been for some years the only game in town. With very few...

    GS850 Cam Followers/Tappet Bucket Won?t Install

As others have said. alignment is key to reinstalling them. It is possible for the outer valve springs to be slightly out of position on the retainers. I have seen this prevent the buckets re- entering. What can be done - if you can see down well enough - is ease the spring(s) into a more...

    piston wrist pins. 1100G,

Personally, if i'm choosing between used pins, they get measured - carefully. 3 places - the two ends which run in the pistons - and the center. Least worn set of four wins - provided they are the same wall thickness. Discolouration is grounds for exclusion. I do give them a quick polish with...

    Valve cover

1/ No 2/ Yes 3/ Buy an impact driver and bits. The screws to remove are only 5mm unlike the LHS 6mm.

    Cam cover end trim removal.

I've always read it as another designer wanting to put his fingerprints on what he's drawn.

    Cam cover end trim removal.

Yeah, cover has to come off to remove those screws. No problems removing the cover with them on.

Katana - 1135EFE - spark plug blown out of head.

I have done several of the 16V heads. GSX and GSXR. Helicoils on the lot and never a problem. Once lockdown is over i can walk into at least three places in ChCh and buy the correct helicoils - I'm out of stock atm but have the taps.. Waiting for international shipping atm is a mugs game. As has...

2021 Wow, new age group owns MotoGP

This is the generation who've grown up with on-board technology. i doubt many would know how to ride a 500 2 stroke which had a savage edge to the power band. They are all conditioned to linear power curves now.

Katana - 1135EFE - spark plug blown out of head.

Couple of points. I'd use a helicoil rather than a timesert. There isn't much room between the plug hole and the seat inserts so the thinnest insert is the safest one to use. Closer to the seats you get the more likely it is to crack. And I'd only do the one needed unless another is visibly bad...

    GS1100e cam cap bolts

Well, seeing as no-one's answered, I'll admit to having used 6mm socket head capscrews as replacements. OE is hard to find at this end of the world. I have however used 12mmOD flat washers under the heads. Torque to the usual values. They are at least as high spec as the OE flanged bolts - and...

Wurring sound? from trans or final drive?

Just drilled the socket head and looped around a leg of the u-joint from memory. Loctited - and done up with a long tube over the allen key. I'd probably use the rattle gun now.

Wurring sound? from trans or final drive?

Very strong. I could get one readily where a 14mm hex head high tensile screw was harder to get. Memory says the shank size was an accurate 14mm too which is required. Don't think the hex head screws are that accurate. Tightened with a long piece of tube slipped over the allen key. If a hex...

Wurring sound? from trans or final drive?

The shaft has to come out to go in a lathe. With the nut broken off the end it all just slides apart. So watch you don't drop parts or lose the sequence of shims etc. The new screw up the center will do what the nut did and hold it all together. i used a socket head high tensile allen screw...

Wurring sound? from trans or final drive?

Yes,pulled out with the engine in the frame. i worked out what had to be cut back and attacked it with a die grinder. Not a lot had to be removed to get the plate past the frame and there's plenty of meat on the frame members. Splashed a bit of paint in there once it was back together. No need...

Wurring sound? from trans or final drive?

At least you now know what it is. IMO repairing your existing parts is the best way out. All the shimming and preloads are set and known. The center of the broken shaft is soft and can be drilled and tapped quite easily by a competent engineering shop. The size used depends on what tap sizes...
