DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

what did you wrench on today??

When it's back together. Took the pipe in for gritblasting today - it's only painted and looking a tad shabby. But we're middle of winter here and it's too cold and damp to paint in the spaces I have available. I've just gone through the same guy's GS1000 racebike which has sat for several...

    GS650 cams in a GS550 head?

Where do we start....If you swapped the cam sprockets over, did you get them on in the correct orientation ? Why can't you time them up ? What's not lining up ?

what did you wrench on today??

In the course of going over a GS1000 dropped off here some time back, I sorted an annoying oil leak. The owner complained of a leak from under the sprocket cover which gave 3 possibilities. Gearbox output shaft seal, gearchange shaft seal or neutral switch.... As it turned out, once the cover...

    17tooth sprocket

And i wouldn't advise using 525. It's pretty much an oddball size now. The late bikes are using 520 which is now to the point where it's very good indeed.

FYI about cam end plugs 8V and 16V issues popping out

There has to be pressure pushing them out. First check is the vent arrangement on top of the cam cover - is it blocked ? But yes, simply installing them with the lips inwards works.

A word of Warning regarding Chains

There's got to be side load on the clip link for it to bend and release the clip. I'd take the time to check sprocket alignment with a good straightedge.

Help me choose 1100e fork swap!

FWIW, the last right way up GSXR forks are probably better than the first models of upside downs. Length is less of a problem too.

GS1000G - firing on all 4 plugs at same time

Correct - but only in pairs. 1-4 and 2-3. All 4 sparking at the same time is a wiring problem IMO. The OP's cleaning of all connections was the correct thing to do first.

What is 'extra' port on carb body/float bowl flange? Matching hole in gasket not bowl

i suspect it's an air bleed intake point. You'd need to compare the air intake side of carbs with and without the hole to confirm it. Commonly, the air bleed intake is one of the openings in the bottom of the intake bell. If one is blanked off on yours, the air has to come in from somewhere for...

Slight noise sops when I pull in the clutch

In my experience, when the noise goes away with load applied through the clutch lifting mechanism, it's usually clutch basket endfloat. This can be caused by a loose nut or by wear on the basket center. Fairly easily checked by trying the nut or pulling/pushing the empty basket in place. A dial...

GSX 400 f no spark issues

Try dropping a line to Hyperpac ignitions here in NZ. Ignitors from this era are his speciality.

Replacing crankshaft on gs650, requesting tips for a proper swap

If your original crank is straight, reuse that with it's own shells. That end damage isn't significant. It'll clean up well enough to reuse. To go down the path of changing the crank plus clearancing the shells is something for an experienced engine builder. Avoid it if you can. I wouldn't do...

GSX 400 f no spark issues

Well finding an ignitor will be a pain. Id' look at putting an early GSXR ignition on it. Still plenty of bits around for those. Even grafting a Dyna S on is a possibility - but you hit the cost vs bike value limits there quite quickly. The 400F is rareish - but not really collectible.

Broken bolt in clutch basket / new bolts

Removing a broken bolt from a clutch hub pillar can be very tricky. There's effectively no margin for error. Personally, I'd take the hub to a TIG welder and get a scrap bolt welded to the visible end of the broken one. It will then be possible to simply wind it out with no damage to the thread...

GSX 400 f no spark issues

Can you confirm which type of GSX400F you have please. There is an 8 valve twin with this designation - and a 16valve 400 four with the same. The twins generally don't have many problems - but the early 400 fours have plenty, including ignitor issues. Your problems do sound heat related. If...

Pilot jets are 1 size larger than spec on new-to-me bike - replace w/'correct'?

Correct. And an aftermarket pipe usually made things worse. Leave it as is until you've put some miles on it.

Irish Road Racing 2nd year of panic-demic

I'd suspect that when they do return, the first year back will have travel restrictions as a minimum. Quite possibly no-one from the UK mainland. But that's a guess.

Irish Road Racing 2nd year of panic-demic

They'll be back. There's enough local support - and local businesses gain enough from the events being run that they will return. Given the situation in the UK at present, I think cancelling is a wise decision.

Correct Oil Pressure '78 GS 750

Depends what you know of the bike's history. If it's recently had a top end rebuild then, yes, ride it and bed it in. If it's been laid up for years, ride it long enough to show up what needs doing. 9/10 in my experience it's valve stem seals that have hardened with age. Have a look at the...

    Shifter shaft sleeve/guide

If you make one up. any of the machinable plastics will work. Make it a loose fit too. Alignment once the cover is on isn't exact. It doesn't carry any load to speak of, it's just an outrigger stabilising the shaft end.
