A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Starter motor gear shaft problem?

These guys still do a model compatibility check. https://www.cmsnl.com/products/motor-assembly-starting_3110043401/?recommId=0369c30106a0894760d7396d31bf958e On first look the part numbers for the 450 and 500 are different. That does not mean that the parts are.

    Squeaky front forks

Time for the Mk.1 Earhole. Get someone to sit on the bike and compress the front and see if you can pinpoint exactly where it's coming from. Small dogs are good at this, Humans can use a funnel as an ear trumpet. What is moving, speedo cable, brake hose. Is the fairing moving on a mount. Is it...

    1980 GS1000gt Tappet clearances

Here is a link to our archive of service manuals and wiring diagrams and much more.... https://gsarchive.bwringer.com/ The GS1000E/S/L/G manual is about two thirds down the middle column. Just below that one is the 1980 supplement for the GS1000T

    Squeaky front forks

The specified volume is really a guide. There may not be much of a difference but you would have to consider the possibility that the new springs take up a different amount of space than the old. Could the squeaking be dry sliding between the fork legs and the seals? I have used a tiny amount of...

Gunson Colortune, Am I using it wrong?

It sounded like a great idea when I bought it in '83 and it is cool to be able to look into the cylinder. The novelty wore off fairly quick as I could never get it to do something useful or repeatable. Put it down to my inexperience and went back to plug colour, exhaust colour, smell and fuel...

    Fairnig Installation

Now I recall that the PO had made new vee brackets with a longer leg on the headlight attachment side. Even so the turn signals prevented the fairing going back far enough to let the headlight into the fairing and the headlight was a bit too big for the fairing hole.

    Starter motor gear shaft problem?

Another vote for opening the motor. As the brushes wear down it's easier to get jammed in the slots. Make a careful inventory of the washers on the rotor. There could be a bunch of them at the drive end. Look for any sign that the armature is touching the magnets and check the magnets are not...

    Fairnig Installation

Which Emgo fairing is it? My 850 came with an Emgo cafe racer fairing with vee shaped brackets that attached to the headlight mounting screws and gave a certain amount of movement in the slots to clear the turn signals. In fact the fairing had to be set too far forward to clear the signals...

    Odometer repair?

Is that the instrument cluster with the odo and trip counter side by side and the reset knob off to the right of the trip counter? At a guess the odo and trip share a spindle and a spring loaded dog engages the trip counter. It's possible that this is just dirty and no longer slides back into...

    SH775 on a GS1000L - two locations - no luck

Can the starter relay and or fusebox be shifted around? Generally these battery boxes have unused holes giving options for placement of stuff.

    Loaded question gs or cb

Availability of parts and a good support community would be high on my list. Perhaps not the reason to buy but a reason not to buy. The CB650 never really took off, around here at least. A friend had one when I had a KZ650 and we would swap bikes for a few days. Never liked the CB and don't...

    Cruzinimage GS1000 gasket set

As time goes on more of us will have no option but to go aftermarket for gaskets. There was at time the name Athena was a go to. Something happened and we see horror stories. I cannot unsee that melting green base gasket. The last set I got was NE Don't know if they even exist anymore. The...

    Gs850 new pistons

That's a lot more than the factory spec. How to interpret that I don't know but it would seem they are a larger ring diameter that needs a bigger squeeze to fit but may be easier to get into the piston grooves. Without knowing what they are made of or how much they will set after a few heat...

I need an estimation of the weight of a GS550 engine

Rule of thumb for air cooled fours of that vintage for me is 2 lb/hp. Bit less above 650cc, bit more below 650cc

    Gs850 new pistons

Text throws up funny characters sometimes depending on the devices etc etc. I think I get your numbers anyway. On the face of it your 8 - 14 thou in the bore compares well with the stock 4 - 12 thou. The service limit is 30. What are the free end gaps? The difference between free and fitted gaps...

    Gs850 new pistons

Are we talking ring end gaps or groove to ring clearances? Free end gaps, before fitting, of 35 and 37 thousandths inch for rings 1 & 2. Limit 28 & 30 thou. Fitted in bore 4 to 12 thou for both 1&2 with a service limit of 30 thou. Manual here...

    Broken Fork Air Valve!

Being cheap, I......... :) If the springs are the correct length, withing service limits you could put a spacer on top of them to preload the forks. Mine came with an adjustable ramp type pre-loader in there. Even if you replaced the air valve you would almost certainly have different leak rates...
