A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Now I have a transmission noise - diagnosis help please.

I do hope so, I'm going to drain and change the gear oil again tonight and perhaps take it for a short spin in the hopes that the weight of me and straightening out the driveshaft a bit has something to do with it. Perhaps the driveshaft splines aren't all the way seated in the final drive...

Now I have a transmission noise - diagnosis help please.

I sure hope not! Anyone else have a diagnosis? Can rotating the engine without oil in it several times by hand bust a tooth off the bevel drive gears?

Now I have a transmission noise - diagnosis help please.

I haven't ridden it yet, just had it on the center stand, and I never thought to run the donor bike through the gears on the stand, it went fine down the road here in my neighborhood. From another thread, it would be great if this was all it is: I also read that the clutch hub nut can make a...

Now I have a transmission noise - diagnosis help please.

Got my engine noise sorted, hooked up the driveshaft and now I have a transmission noise... It seems to get louder as I up shift. Here's the history - I bought an 82 850L with 12k on it to be a donor for my ~42k 81 850G. I only rode it a few times once I degummed the tank and carbs since it sat...

They look nice, how much? Their website doesn't have a shopping cart, looks like they only sell through dealers/distributors?

Yes indeed! Few more things to fix and she'll be road worthy.

    Engine noise diagnosis help

Solved! It was valve clatter. Solved! It was valve clatter. Thanks Charles - I did, to replace the gaskets. Turns out it was the valves as suspected. Luckily the shims were all flat however upon checking clearances, I had mixed some shims up while putting them in! In my defense I did have...

    82 gs 850 gl project

Sorry to hear that. Although it's more work - depending on your available time and skill level, you may have better luck parting it out. Where are you located?

    Engine noise diagnosis help

Thanks Steve, the clutch area was untouched other than that the shift fork wiggled loose while I was replacing covers so I had to slide it back in to place. It definitely needs a carb sync after the shims were replaced but it's not terribly far off considering. More info tonight when I get off...

    Engine noise diagnosis help

Thanks fo the reply John - I hope it's something that simple and it should be, nothing else changed. They'll be cool enough by tomorrow when I get off work to take a look under the valve cover. Hopefully the cam lobe isnt worn...

    Engine noise diagnosis help

Got the engine back in my 850 finally. While I had it out I sandblasted it and painted it and replaced all of the engine case cover gaskets change the oil and filter and replaced a few shims...that's all that has changed. I'm leaning towards a valve noise and my mechanics stethoscope seems...

Project: Chinese gauge set on GSX1100G

I suppose neither of those issues are deal breakers but that's common with similar concerns I've heard of people having had on the "Ali" sites - items not as pictured or described, and sometimes defective or with slight issues. Granted I haven't heard much actual feedback from people and some...

    Blowing fuses!

No sequence or polarity, the 3 stator wires are AC and can be wired any way you like. Does your bike have the headlight switch loop? You'll want to eliminate that if so. There are several posts here about that as well. There are also 2 schools of thought on the hot red wire placement. Most...

Bucking Bronco - Suspension Maintenance - Sonic Springs

Me too, at some point this fall, and I hear that! Tagging along, need to do one of my 850's at some point too. Growler, love your approach, a lot of riders I've known over the years just want to do the minimum. You're better off doing everything while you've got it apart IMO.

1983 GS 850G: She waited for me, but can I wait for her?

Nice. The coils seem to attract oil and dirt, and they are an item that generally works or doesn't work. In my experience, as long as the connections are solid and clean they are easy enough to test. Just make sure you have very little voltage drop at the coil input leads and/or do the coil...

Project: Chinese gauge set on GSX1100G

It's nice to have actual good and bad user reviews on this, I don't know anyone else that's tried it so I'm still holding out, even though there are items in my cart and I get emails to come back and complete the purchase. For now I'm good on eBay or mostly Amazon due to the user reviews. My...

Project: Chinese gauge set on GSX1100G

Tagging along. I've often considered ordering from alibaba or ali express but never have. Cheap prices and an interesting model that connects buyers directly with the manufacturer that could change the future of the way we do business, cutting out middle men and distributor mark ups. I just...

    Poll for Compufire R/R Users

I mounted mine up front right above the oil cooler since I still have the stock airbox, and I am sure there is voltage drop due to the longer wires, but I used the provided 10 gauge wires so hopefully not as much.
