A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Thinking ahead - ring thickness?

Doesn't a 450 engine just bolt right into a 300 frame? Comes with a six speed and everything.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

I think Suzuki figured out the only way to make the 550 go fast at all was by setting it up to use the highest RPM you speak of, they put the cam timing a lot different than the rest of the GSes to do just that. Changing cams is a lot easier than redesigning everything in the combustion...

    81 gs550 highway speed?

What do you want me to say? Don't shift until 11,247 RPM? I'm not going to say that, and if you do that and something blows up don't blame me, but if I'm trying to get my 550 moving in a hurry I shift it somewhere in that vicinity. If it won't go past 7,000 there's something wrong with it...

    Thinking ahead - ring thickness?

The 300s don't have six speeds? Who'd a thunk it.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

Are you saying the tach won't work, or that the engine won't wind out properly? Hope not, a 550 that won't wind out properly is a dog indeed. It's all they've got.

    Front disc on rear...

yes, it all looks good and I rarely use the back brake anyway.

Why start with the main jet?

ON CV carbs, the main jet does control all the ones below them.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

Certain RPM the engine starts to breathe well, feels happy, makes quite a bit of power, seems to gt great throttle response, just seems to work well. A tractor makes most of it's torque just off idle, a car maybe by a few thousand RPM, a big motorcycle maybe somewhat higher, but the little...

    81 gs550 highway speed?

And winding it out properly will make a bigger difference.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

I ride it about like I ride any other bike, except with the 550 you have to wind it out to get anywhere. And no I don't live anywhere near Massachusetts. Too many Patriots fans.

    650G RPM / speed

Yeah, I just remembered I thought the 650G I had a few years ago had a really nice drive ratio for that engine. 5th would go plenty fast, yet would accelerate nicely without downshifting. I have basically the same engine on a smaller lighter bike, so as thinking if I got it close I'd probably...

    650G RPM / speed

The rear sprocket is the 550's stock 50, the front I just went from the stock 15 to a 16. This with the standard old 530 non o ring chain the 550s came with. I found an almost new chain off a 550L I parted out a while ago. I'm sure the chain won't last very long on one new sprocket and one...

    650G RPM / speed

I have something very close, but in fifth gear. 45mph = 3600, 55mph = 4350. Sixth gear is about 3250 and 4000. Not quite what I expected.

Different Jet Sizes in my 550s, what does it mean? (VM22S)

The stock main jet on the VM22 550s is an 80.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

No, they are most efficient cruising in the range where the cam is beginning to work. Lugging them around wastes fuel. I have another bike with a real time fuel consumption readout, at a given cruising speed the fuel used doesn't change in any gear that gives between 4,000 and about 8,000...

    81 gs550 highway speed?

The 650 is not as bad as the 550, it does make some torque down low, due to a different cam. You actually can ride it around slowly if you want, the mid range goes pretty good. Still if you want to accelerate, anything under about 6,000 or 7,000 is not using it's full potential, and it will...

    A close one

I'm just happy you saw it coming before it happened, if that all took you by surprise you would have hit him for sure, and probably not hit him very well if you know what I mean.

    650G RPM / speed

Any speed, just pick one you can remember. I'll figure it out from there.
