A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    650G RPM / speed

Can't remember, can't find the old posts. Anyone with a stock 650G know what RPM it's doing at what speed in fifth? Trying to figure out which sprocket ratio I want in the 550/675... Trying to get the same in sixth as the 650 had in fifth. I remember the 650G was set up really well for...

    81 gs550 highway speed?

That sounds like you're just opening the throttle in sixth.

    Front disc on rear...

Huh, the '83 550 has a smaller disc than the '78 rear disc? Mine was the same diameter. Took a longer faster ride last night, still working fine.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

Again, lugging a 550 is no good. Wind it out. The real power starts at about 8,000 or so, and continues as far as you want to go.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

Yes, they all have six speeds. In stock form they won't wind out sixth. 90 is about it, they are dogs unless you wind them out. Just opening the throttle it will go faster in 5th than it will go in 6th. Depending on your sprocket ratios it may even have a higher top speed in 4th than 5th...

    Front disc on rear...

Well it seems to work, got hot when I used the brakes, stayed cool when I didn't. Went out on an empty highway and heated it up good, braked fairly hard a few times to bed the pads a little. Once that was done it seemed to slow the bike a tiny bit better than the old brakes. After that I...

    Front disc on rear...

Fork twist is BS, at least on these bikes. Like you said, it's all over engineered.

    GSX750ES : Inserting valve guides

Just curious, the shop specialize in motorcycle engines or car and truck engines?

    Front disc on rear...

With perfect brakes and strong fingers, both will stop at the limit of what the tires can do. It's more about easy stopping than quicker stopping. Light pressure with one or two fingers is a lot easier to control than pulling as hard as you can with all four. I also have some newer bikes with...

    Front disc on rear...

Interesting, I'd like to know why this happened. I will definitely be checking for heat when I start riding it. Thanks for the story.

    Rings?

Even with tight compression it's really not all that much harder to turn the engine with a wrench. No big deal either way.

    Front disc on rear...

The pistons come out far enough, they will clamp on the disc even with no pads. Pads can't drop out anyway, there are pins through them. I don't use the rear brake all that much and probably wouldn't ever heat it up anyway, especially since the front brake works so well. I put it all together...

    81 gs550 highway speed?

No it's not. My 550s have all done that. They just love to wind out.

Vermont registration for lost title bikes

In Colorado they just read the VIN off the frame and write it on an official looking piece of paper. No looking up anything, no engine numbers.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

Have you tried winding it all the way out past the redline in 4th, then in 5th, and then hitting 6th? Mine goes a LOT faster that way.

    Front disc on rear...

This on a GS 550/675, mostly 1978. Replacing chain and sprockets to slightly alter the final drive ratio, while I'm in there noticed the brake pads are almost gone, might as well swap in a nice smooth disc while I'm at it. Looking at my stockpile of discs, I have a lot of the later slotted...

    81 gs550 highway speed?

Huh, mine shows 12,000 a lot.
  18. tkent02

    81 gs550 highway speed?

These are your limits, not the bike's limits.
  19. tkent02

    81 gs550 highway speed?

If you stop before it gets close to the power band, you're lugging it. It's not a truck.

    81 gs550 highway speed?

But please make sure you have the valve clearances correct and there are no air leaks before you start riding it hard.
