A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Long trips anyone?

It's got the original regulator on it. (Correction.. I suspect it's the original. But I'm not 100% certain) I can check the stator, and rectifier. If all check good, should I still preemptively replace it?

    Long trips anyone?

I have an 82 GS1100GK that is very well maintained with about 35k miles on it. It runs perfectly without issue now, after about a solid year or working out issues. I normally only take it on shorter rides. Less than 100 miles or so, on a "longer day". I would like to take it out for...

    Crash Guard Top Mounting Bolt

True. Guess I hadn't thought about it like that. Really, then it's just a matter of space. I guess I could measure the thickness of both guard mounts and see if I have more than that sticking out. Enough to be able to thread a nut on. It'll be close if it works at all!

    Crash Guard Top Mounting Bolt

Thanks. I did look at it, which is why I'm asking. There isn't much bolt past the nut. I can probably omit the washer if I really had to but I might be concerned about it staying put afterwards. I would definitely just prefer to get a longer bolt, if I can find one. Which is also why I was...

    Crash Guard Top Mounting Bolt

82 GS1100 GK. I have a set of crash bars from another user here on the forum. This one has the 3 mounting points. Do I need a longer bolt for the top mount, where the engine mounts to the frame? The crash bars attach on either end of this bolt. I'm talking about the long one that goes...

    Valve clearance questions

Third vote for the zip-tie method. This is the way. I use a zip tie to hold the valve open, and a small screwdriver with a magnet on the end to "suck" the valve out of the seat. Couldn't be easier. And get the spreadsheet Steve is offering. Not only does it make it easy to see what shims...

    GK Luggage Rack?

Anyone got a luggage rack that will fit on an 82 GS1100GK? Or know what other models will fit? I see several on eBay but not this one specifically. I'm not even exactly sure how it's supposed to mount so I cant tell by looking if the ones I find will fit. Update: Found one from a user here on...

    How to raise the needle?

Yea, if I ever sell this bike, which I don't plan to do, I would want to include a list of all the things I did to it so the new owner knows. But that's just me.

    How to raise the needle?

Update.. No amount of raising or lowering the needles fixed the mid range stumble. So I went ahead and found some stock needles on eBay. And wouldn't you know it, that resolved the issue completely! I also re-adjusted my fuel height because it was higher than normal to try and eliminate the...

    Carb choke rail lever needed...

To add to what Ness said, part 80 is probably not needed. I just rebuilt my carbs and left that part off during reassembly. Then I realized it was there to "protect" sync adjustment screw from the clutch cable. But the cable doesn't actually touch the adjuster. Maybe in some situations it could?

    How to raise the needle?

So this is an interesting development. I did a full tear down, ultrasonic clean, and rebuild with all new seals. I was mainly concerned about the transition ports, possibly being clogged since the issue is right at the transition. 6 hrs later, that did not fix the problem. But I wanted to do...

LED Turns WITH stock self cancelling (Working)

Update 7/25 I was able to make 3D printed case to house the flasher and relay. Finding a male flasher plug with wires was impossible, so I bought a cheap flasher from the auto parts store a took it apart and stole the metal blades out of it. Now I have the whole thing in one box slightly bigger...

    Long and Short Plug Boots

I did mean 2 & 3. And I did mean straight. But to be clear they’re long and straight with a short 90 at the end. Or nearly 90 degrees. I think you’re onto something. Looking at bass cliffs plug cap guide, his are pointed out. Although his look a lot shorter than the ones I have. Also...

    Long and Short Plug Boots

When I say "middle two" I mean cylinders 2 & 3. Look at how close the #2 plug is to the valve cover. you can even make out where the rubber on the boot is starting to crack. I have about 0.0" to lift that long ass cap up before it hits the sharp edge of the valve cover, and then I have to...

    Long and Short Plug Boots

82 GS1100GK. It has NGK plug caps and what looks to be stock coils. The two inner caps, for cylinders 2 & 3, are long and straight and the two outer caps are short and angled. This makes removing the plug caps from the two inner cylinders really hard. So difficult in fact, that the rubber...

4th clutch cable in 10 months

The routing is as depicted in the manual. The handlebars are not stock. I'm using the Emgo wide handlebars. But the alignment of the perch / cable routing is nearly perfectly straight. The bars are wide, but not very sloped. The pull is easy, and from what I can tell it does not bind up at...

4th clutch cable in 10 months

Just as the tooth says, I’m on my 4th clutch cable in the 10 months that I’ve had the bike. At first I thought the first one was just old. I thought the second one was just cheap. After the third one broke I figured out by the third one that it had something to do with the lever because it seems...

    How to raise the needle?

This is what I have suspected all along. Which is why I was attempting to raise the needle. What is this "air corrector" you speak of? Are you suggesting bigger air jets and then a larger main to compensate? It's already got 120 mains. Also, I have a replacement snorkel on order. Had to...

    How to raise the needle?

The stock size should be 115. This bike has 120 for the mains.
