A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Starting Trouble

Good catch on the ‘80. I didn’t realize that the “T” used a lever. I learn something new every day on here. Thanks.

    Starting Trouble

I recall the GS Wisperer guy telling me that putting the pet-cock on prime won’t do anything unless you also apply some vacuum to the pet-cock. So if you put it on prime and crank the engine over a few revolutions that will send a few puffs of vacuum to the pet-cock to open the internal valve...

    1982 Gs 1100 Igniter questions

When the ignitor pulls the coil to ground to charge up the coil primary you would only see a few volts on the coil wire going to the ignitor. (The coil would consume most of the available voltage.) When the ignitor release the coil ground to discharge the coil you would see near battery voltage...

    fuel use question

Depends on what you mean by “amount of fuel I use”. Are you measuring the amount of fuel you use in miles per gallon, or in gallons per hour, or in gallons per 1000/rpm, or in ??? Generally speaking, the wider the throttle blades are open, the more fuel goes into the engine.

1977 GS400 help with mystery of the right ignition points

Or unplug the 2 orange/white wires from the wiring harness connector. BTW, I see this gs400 is a vertical twin, so, since it has dual points, I suspect it is what I call an odd fire engine. In other words, the piston do not go up and down together, but actually one piston is going up when the...

1977 GS400 help with mystery of the right ignition points

Well, if the condenser is soldered to the coil, remove the orange/white wires from the coils so your meter can’t find a ground back out of the coil and then do as above to see if the meter finds ground through the condenser.

1977 GS400 help with mystery of the right ignition points

I can only offer my SWAG (that’s my Silly Wild A@@ Guess) as to what might cause a set of points to always appear as open. Perhaps one of those condensers is internally shorted so as it doesn’t pass any (very much) current to its points and sucks the current to ground. That way the points never...

1977 GS400 help with mystery of the right ignition points

Orange/white wire should not be going to a ground. Orange/white wire is the “hot” wire going to the coil to power up the coils. In the picture you attached those wires look like black wires to me that maybe have a metal clamp to hold them in position so they don’t end up someplace they shouldn’t...

1977 GS400 help with mystery of the right ignition points

With the ignition turned on, (I assume all other connections to the coils and points are back to original), your meter is reading battery voltage *IF* both points are open, or it is reading voltage available (that would be battery voltage minus voltage drop) to the ignition coils if either point...

1977 GS400 help with mystery of the right ignition points

I am having a problem following just where your probes are being connected and what type of test light you are using. And “everything worked as it should” doesn’t seem to tell me much. But if you disconnected the orange wires from their respective coils and connected a meter probe to each...

So, I did find Eli’s bridge. Unfortunately, I don’t have my Suki on the road. And I’m not tech savvy enough to upload my picture.

I have had various threads do the same thing: turn light blue and hang around for a while and then disappear. Haven’t been able to notice any kind of a patten.

Ditto! And my GS750ET picked up over a volt at the coils after thus cleaning the ignition switch!

Exhaust temps - fine tuning carbs

The way I think of it, the colder plug gets colder by dissipating heat OUT of the plug faster, and into the head, thereby making the exhaust gases a smidgeon warmer.
