A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    shipping engine

I used RPS, they went depot to depot for about 80 cents a pound. This was a few years ago but the rates are about the same. I had to shrink wrap it onto a pallet, I think they gave a better rate if it was palletized.

    Valve Seal Replacement

I assume you did the oil control rings properly on the cylinders, could you have overfilled the engine with oil? As for the seals, you won't get them off intact, they will be torn up. The new ones should be seated with a 10mm deep socket over the valve stem, using it as a guide. Tap it down...

I reset the pilot idle screws and lubricated them a little before setting them 1.5 turns out. I increased this to 2 on the bike. The bike needs new boots, if the carbs are leaned or moved the vacuum changes and speed as well. I used a vacuum gage to test with.

    81 GS550T Full Rebuild...In Ohio

I've had a long list of friends in my climate controlled garage with a great stereo and every tool imaginable. Mine can't always need work so it all goes to great use. You might be able to learn some stuff from the other guy and lend a helping hand from time to time. That's what old motorcycles...

Want to repaint tank, but don't know how

I tried painting myself but the results were less than spectacular. I've sent 3 bikes to a professional who does perfect work. In the end I decided I didn't have the environment, equipment or skills to do it right and the costs of redoing it 4 times mounted. I stick to the wrenches and let the...

Air filter question about my 81 gs650

The 650G is tuned quite well with the airbox and the carbs selected for it. If you remove the airbox in favor of something else be prepared to do a lot of tuning and playing with the carbs. I would leave it be and run the stock set up.

    81 GS550T Full Rebuild...In Ohio

Is the truck worth putting 4K into the transmission? Might you be able to find another at a wrecking yard and swap it? A tranny from a wrecked car is usually OK, after all the vehicle is in the yard due to an accident, not a trans failure. Most of the trans shops make mega bucks off repairs...

What to check/replace when reviving an old bike

Spend your money on brakes and tires. Rebuild the calipers and master cylinder and replace the brake hoses if you can. Safety trumps everything and you need to stop properly and maintain adhesion to the road. Before spending the money on the brakes and tires go over the bikes and see if there...
