A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS550 doesn't like prolonged high speeds - fuel starvation or something else?

Does your other GS550 run well ? I am not very familiar with the differences between 78/79 .. but if it is an option to swap the gas tank that would be an easy way to check/rule out if the issue is in the gas cap or fuel tap, or something else. Same for the carbs.

    Output Terminal?

It's not needed, just an accessory point to hook up optional components needing 12v.

    Greetings from Melbourne Australia

Welcome Syd ! Sounds like you're off to a great start to rebuild the bike, as you already know lots of friendly and knowledgeable people here should you need any help. Nice project to ease into retirement and scratch that bike itch .. We love pictures, would be good to start a project thread...

    Aftermarket front master cylinder suggestion

Did you use something like brake grease or brake oil to lube it when you assembled it ? If not it may not want to slide easy now, but will work fine when mounted and brake oil is introduced. Easy to check by putting a squirt of brake oil in there. It's easy to take apart, if that does not work...

    Aftermarket front master cylinder suggestion

Understood & agree. Rebuilding can be a pain even if you have the right tools and some rebuild kits are crap. Cheap aftermarket MC's can be crap, but I bought one for 80 euros from my parts dealer he assured me was good and it was. Looks like you're looking for the most practical and economical...

    Aftermarket front master cylinder suggestion

I have worked on many, with seized pistons too. Nearly every one could be rebuilt. Is yours damaged so badly you don't consider a rebuild ?

    1979 GS750 (VM26SS) Leaking Float Bowls

Well noticed :D That's what makes fuel level measurement crucial, more so than in the past when replacements were like the originals. The originals were real thin, the metal/alu ones are thicker. That means the float seats mounted with the thicker gaskets are located lower in the bowl, and the...

gs450l bearing outer race stuck in front wheel

If you have access to a welder, lay 2 welds on the race, 1" long on opposite sides. When the weld cools it will shrink the race and if it does not simply fall out, a screwdriver will probably pry it out easy. Or weld a piece of metal across the race so you have something to hit to drive it out...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Bad habit, the bike let you know it has brake issues. Hope what you take away from this is don't postpone maintenance, especially with your brakes. You have been putting your life on the line. Not trying to be rude, but this is .. well, you know the word i am looking for. Let's go with...

    GS450 Catastrophic failure

Just a thought, that trans probably was overloaded bad. The combination of gearing and sticking rear brake may have been too much ... very heavy on the drive train. I would fix the brake, if it does not simply stick a bit but locks up you may end up on your ass after all ..

Turn signals light but don't flash

That's not enough. The originals are 23W, so 46W total load is expected, not 20W ...

LED H4 headlight bulbs - bizzare workings

Yes, lots of rubbish around. Though the pinout usually works. Another 2 possible issues with H4 LED lamps : * Heat. quality LED lamps have some sort of heatsink, so the LED does not overheat. The cheap ones have the LEDs soldered on without one, reducing lifespan drastically. * Effective...

LED H4 headlight bulbs - bizzare workings

No, oversimplified : the oldfashioned R/R makes the genny work fulltime so both RR and generator get hot. The power not used loops back into the generator, making it even hotter. So the more power you use, the better. Always drive with the lights on. That's an issue with the H4 bulbs already...

LED H4 headlight bulbs - bizzare workings

Have you upgraded your R/R ? If not, replacing the H4 with LED is a bad idea.

    1983 GS1100E Clutch parts questions

The number of plates you need is in the picture you posted. Yes, some aftermarket plates work, but if they damaged your clutch basket after a few thousand miles you would be sorry. Can't beat OEM, i'd look around for a good price, still to be found.

Engine does not have to run for the turn signals to work. Did you check bulb wattage ? Have one or more originals around to compare to ?

    1979 GS750E Fuse Box Cover

Do you know how to look up OEM parts for your bike ? Check sites like Partzilla or CMSNL. Select your bike, and look for the part you need. For instance the 1979 GS750EC at Partzilla, look at the "electrical" slide. Fusebox is part 12 : OEM number 36740-49X00. Google that number and you will...

    My 82 1100E

been a fan of Larry his Cooley for a long time. In one of the articles or maybe forum posts he said something like don't use the same black on all parts, it will look like the bike was dropped in a barrel of black paint. Use different black like glossy and matt so even the black parts will...
