A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Unusual carbon build-up?

Two points come to mind looking at the pic.Firstly, yes, probably bad valve guide seals.Secondly, the squish areas on the pistons front and back having so little carbon on suggests the block has been decked at some point.I'd have suggested that it may have been built with no base gasket - but...

    750 cams in a 1000?

Here, for production racing, what you did was get Suzuki NZ to build - and homologate as production - a run of bikes with Yosh Stage 2 cams, the 30mm carbs and big bore pipes. There is of course a long existing controversy as to how many were built. They are also changing hands for ridiculous...

Finding a custom tooth count 520 sprocket

I've more than once bought industrial blank sprockets and machined them to suit. 530 is a common industrial size and is easily machined to 520.

    '82 GS450 Engine Chatter - Cam Related?

Locking it via the screw on the side is effectively a poor man's manual tensioner.Same constraints as using a manual tensioner. Adjust when it gets noisy. Lock again after adjusting.I tend to adjust manual tensioners with the cam cover off. That way I can ensure it's not over-tensioned.You...

    '82 GS450 Engine Chatter - Cam Related?

I'd pick it's a tensioner problem. The twins have uneven pulls on the camchain and any slack is readily heard. If the tensioner isn't locking but bouncing in and out you'd get a lot of noise. Wobbling the tacho cable around shouldn't affect anything. I'd set the tension as per the manual -...

    650 piston rings

Current pracise is to use a narrower top ring. I'd suspect that in that size Cruzinimage couldn't source a wider one. I'd check the ring groove side clearances before installation but if they're within spec, I'd use those rings.

torque spec/tips on valve gasket and some extra questions

Put the gasket on dry and a thin layer of threebond on the cover rim. This will stick the gasket to the cover so that it can be reused when the cover is next removed. Yes, threebond on the halfmoons. And definitely no loctite on the cover screws.

    vm26ss float valve/needle refurb?

While everything Zed1015 posted is accurate, this is one case where I'd have to disagree with some of it. Location makes a difference. In NZ and Oz, because of long supply times, we've learned to simply do things rather than wait. I've been refacing the solid alloy float needles since the 80's...

    Cam Degreeing or not

They varied a lot. All somewhere close to 118 inlet and 110 - 112 exhaust. I'd move them to 106/108 for road use. Huge torque increase in the midrange. Much more suitable for NZ road conditions. And pretty good on short roadrace circuits too.

    Cam Degreeing or not

I was doing probably two a month in the shop I had in the mid 80's. Dial the cams, a pipe I had made up to my specs locally and rejet the carbs. The worst I remember was an inlet at 122 deg LC.

    Cam Degreeing or not

Don't laugh....On early GSX1100's when changing the lobe center positions of standard cams, I've frequently had to install them with one pin less separation between the 2 and 3 marks. When the OE inlet lobe center measures up at 118 degrees - and you want 108 degrees - slotting will only get you...

    GS1000 clutch basket endfloat

Yes, machined easily using carbide tip. Fairly slow cutting speed though. I machined the end without the clearance grooves for the oil pump drive, this end may not be hardened. It's possible the other end is.

    splitting my 550 case

Looking at your original picture, there don't seem to be any case bolts in the oil filter housing - which is a classic Suzuki hiding place. I've never seen any inside the cases below the barrel either - that's a Yamaha trick. I think you've got them all and it's simply a corroded dowel.

    Cam endfloat mod - update

No. The original PDF has enough to work with. And with the internet I have now, I can't post pics here. The bike I did is Kiwimacchi's 1000S and I did think about asking him to take some pics - but he was busy elsewhere while I had it.

    splitting my 550 case

The elegant way to use that pry point is to run a tap through the hole on one side - and wind the cases apart with a bolt through the hole, against the other case half. Less potential damage from slipping levers - and please don't use an air wedge on the case joint.

    Clutch hub

Technically it's a Marcelle spring. Supposed to cushion the clutch engagement. IMO Suzuki had realised well before the end of GS1000 production that they had a problem with the clutch basket cush system. Anything which could soften initial engagement would make the cush last longer.

    All possible vacuum leak locations

No. Pull the carb tops off and carefully lift the diaphragms and slides out. Check for tears in the diaphragms. Ensure the diphragm edges are seated correctly when you replace them.

    gs650 connecting rod bearing

As a minimum, it's engine out and the cases split. How do you know it's this rod bearing alone ? If one is this bad usually there are others.

Yoshimura style hand bent short exhaust gs 550

Hand bending takes an incredible amount of heat. The best setup I saw was a gas ring with multiple jets which the pipe passes through.Sequence was - hold in the ring heating the area to be bent until enough length was red hot - then hand bend around former. To get the tube back to a consistent...

    Cam endfloat mod - update

If you only need to control endfloat from the left end it's a little easier. But really you need to hit the cam on the centerline height if you're running anything against it Which makes it very difficult with the half-moons only coming up to centerline height themselves. Not impossible - but...
