A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    82 GS850L dies after 20 minutes, calling guru's

Always been suspicious of those numbers. Since the 850 shared the same frame and the engine was basically the same along with the same body parts, I wonder where that extra 10 or 11 lbs came from?

    Side stand switch

If everything is working right, the oil pressure light will stay on when the kickstand is down. Even if the engine is running.

    Side stand switch

The kickstand switch NEVER was tied to starting the bike. It's only purpose is to light the oil pressure light as a warning when the engine is running and the kickstand is still down. If your oil pressure light doesn't light up with the engine off or the kickstand down, then you need to fix...

Drilling out JB Weld from exhaust bolt thread?

Pretty sure I have an 82+ GS850 head and matching valve cover (combination good for all years 850) if you need one. Shipping may be costly though.

    Side stand switch

Yes, the 82 GL did come with a side stand switch. There should be a green/white and a black/white wire connection. Factory Service Manual has all the wiring diagrams. You're looking near the last pages for the GLZ model. The FSM is located here...

    Gs1100g mikuni needle jet help

The main air jet is the jet on the front right on the air filter side. It's located directly across from the pilot air jet that is a brass screw in jet. The main air jet is a pressed fit brass jet and not easily removed. It can be drilled out to the 1.7mm size but be VERY careful if you...

    Gs1100g mikuni needle jet help

Those carbs are more than likely from an 82 1100EZ 16V engine. Someone probably swapped the carbs thinking that all 1100 used the same carbs. Your carbs probably have a 1.2mm main air jet while the correct main air jet for an 1100G/GK would be a 1.7mm. The bad news is that the main air jets...

    Gs1100g mikuni needle jet help

Stock jets would work just fine. Maybe a little richer on the main and raising the needle a tad would help. You're looking for 115 main jet and a 40 pilot. Both are readily available. Suggest getting only genuine Mikuni jets. Aftermarkets have been hit and miss. Keep looking for 5D58...

You need to have the correct jets. Are you running stock exhaust and air box?

    Speedo cable leaking oil

That tachometer drive is shot and needs to be replaced. You should be able to still use the seals you replaced.

    Gs1100g mikuni needle jet help

The needles and needle jets are no longer available. Used is your only option. I may have a complete set at the house. Do you need just one carb or jets for all 4? I also have a completely rebuilt set of 1100gk carbs I can part with. All screws replaced with SS cap screws. PM me if...

Drilling out JB Weld from exhaust bolt thread?

If the alum doesn't work then you might want to just consider picking up a replacement head off eBay or one of the members here. Might end up being faster and cheaper in the end. I have an 850 1982 head and matching valve cover somewhere at the house.

    Gs1100g mikuni needle jet help

That doesn't look like a Mikuni Needle Jet part number. Are you sure it's a Mikuni jet? I don't see the Mikuni trade marked square in a square symbol. Are yo looking for a stock needle and jet? If so, the stock numbers should be 5D58 for the jet and X-3 for the needle.

    Gs1000 electrical problem

If you have a points system then I'd go ahead and replace the points and condensers. Again, without knowing what year bike it's difficult to know what carbs and ignition system you have.

Purpose of breather hose from top of engine?

There is a slight negative pressure in the air box that assists in scavenging. Makes the ventilation system more efficient and provides better ring sealing.

    Compression and throttle question

The best way to verify valves is, after you've completed the adjustment procedure, do a compression and/or leak down test. If you have a burnt valve the compression will be low and you'll have excessive leak down. If the compression tests are bad then add a teaspoon of oil to each cylinder and...
