A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    GS 1000 G - It mumbles from 3000 to 4000 rpm

For the future, the safest way to remove the float pins, is to use a flat bladed screw driver in the small gap between the head of the the float pin and the post. Twisting the blade will pry the pin head away from the post without putting a side load on the post. Never try to tap the pin out...

    GS 1000 G - It mumbles from 3000 to 4000 rpm

Hi There, really important to start with as many variables taken out of the equation before you start looking at carb settings. As folks have mentioned above, the valve clearances need to be at spec, and the ignition timing should be checked that the ignition advances smoothly from the idle...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

A fine crisp winter's day (Southern Hemisphere) and a place I haven't visited in years. Waiwera beach, on the Hibiscus Coast north of Auckland, New Zealand. It used to be on the main state highway north, before the motorway was built. Used to have a water park pool complex as it is a thermal...

what did you wrench on today??

Yes it will. The conductivity of aluminum is about 0.6 that of copper, the the lug is also tin-plated, so how more effective the lug is in terms of shedding heat to the air flow I guess is the unknown. That being said, the 'bulb' of the thermometer is in contact with the head, and the heat path...

what did you wrench on today??

Always thought a cylinder head temperature (CHT) gauge would be a good thing for an air cooled, and toyed with the idea of a thermocouple wired up to a waterproof digital display. And I might still do this, but its hard to find a gauge/display with the appropriate heat range without spending big...

    Pilot Mixture Screw Consequences

What's worked for me is setting a baseline of 2 turns out on all the screws. Go for a ride so the engine is nice and warm. Drop the idle down to the lowest smooth idle you can achieve. Do a small blip of the the throttle. The revs should pick up very quickly and drop just as quickly. If the revs...

    Still not right, FFS.

All good advice above. You are right to look at the ATU and ignition timing. Probably a good idea to do this first as this results in poor responsiveness as overly advanced or retarded ignition timing lowers reduces combustion efficiency. Adjusting carburetion against a mistimed ignition won't...

    Instability at high speeds

All good info above. If it was me, and I'm assuming it's a bike that's new to you, I'd start by confirming the frame is straight using string-lines. If it's tweaked, nothing else you do will compensate for this. And repair will be necessary. This one below has the steering head is twisted...

'83 1100E cylinder bores look machine sanded?

As above. The hone pattern does a couple of things. It creates micro valleys and peaks (asperities) on the bore surface. During the initial break in the rings cut the peaks off and the peaks reshape the rings to match the exact shape of the bore. The bulk of this happens at the first start up...

    Tire bead question

Interesting to note that the 80 and 81 OEM tyres listed in the parts diagrams for 850GL have different part numbers. 55100-45155 for the 80 (T) and 55100-45350 for the 81 (T). It may be that the 80 bikes were delivered with a tube-type tyre and tube on early tubeless (MT) rims.

    17 Tooth 530 Front Sprocket

Good for you, but you'd be surprised at the tensile strength and life-span of modern chain compared to 630. The Kawasaki 1000 H2R delivers 200bhp and 137.3Nm of torque through a 525 x-ring Here's the size comparison. 630 to 520.

    82 1100ez vacuum petcock question

Sorry Dude, I couldn't resist. RES works as advertised, the plastic screen is actually a two level fuel inlet. If it isn't working the tap is faulty.

    82 1100ez vacuum petcock question

The RES position does absolutely nothing. It's been put there by Suzuki to annoy riders who run out of gas and have to push their bikes to the nearest gas station. Sometimes small queues of Suzuki riders with empty tanks form at gas stations, looking sullen, exchanging knowning eye rolls...

    Tire bead question

The rim size code will give you a clue (e.g. 17xMT2.50). The bead profile is identified by the bead code. MT is 'Motorcycle Tubeless' and as noted above early MT rims often don't have the 'safety lip' -which some say is more about providing an easier seal to pop the the bead on, rather than a...
