A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Unique 100 year old four stroke engine

It's a variation on the sleeve valve engine. The Brits were big on them in WW2. Best known was the Bristol Hercules aero engine which lasted from 1939 (1,290 hp) until the late 1950s (1,980hp) https://www.aarg.com.au/hercules.html#:~:text=The%20Hercules%201%20engine%

    Kaizo Project

Your bike, your choice, but I'm interested in the fact that you are -from what I can see- turning a GS550M Katana into a GS550E? The 550 Kat in what looks like original condition would be a rarer beast that any other GS550. So I guess I'm asking why?

    Inner Tubes...are they needed?

The factory application is stamped on the wheel. If it has MT (Motorcycle Tubeless) as part of the rim size, it means the bead seat profile of the wheel conforms to the standard for tubeless motorcycle tyres. If it has a "J" it not designed to run tubeless, but that doesn't mean a tubeless tyre...

    Carburetors badly out of sync?

IMHO a lot of folk underestimate the value of correctly adjusted mixture screws, thinking of it as 'idle mixture'. Correct pilot mixture makes all the difference in response and control when you just begin to roll on the throttle mid-corner (which you might be doing at 80 mph...) The quickest...

    Carburetors badly out of sync?

May be. Carb sync is most noticeable at idle/just above idle. As you open the throttle the imbalance between carbs becomes an exponentially smaller fraction of total air volume passing through the carb rack.

    Front Master Cylinder Replacement

What you have here is a generic Chinese master cylinder Don't listen to the bigots who automatically equates 'Made in China' with bad or dangerous. Brembo manufactures in China, KTM works (or worked) with CFMoto. China made 19 million motorcycles in 2022, all of which presumably had front...

1981 Suzuki GS 850 carb tuning

Also, re:cold starting. The choke is an enrichener and only works properly when the throttle is closed and full engine vacuum is applied to the circuit. So cold start with choke and no throttle, only blip the throttle once the choke is closed or almost closed.

1981 Suzuki GS 850 carb tuning

Might sound silly, but make sure the pod filters are clean and correctly oiled. Engines pump air, jets just add fuel at the correct ratio for the mass of air being passed through the engine at various speeds and loads. Dirty filters adversely affect air flow and pods (especially gauze/oil...

Not sure where to put this....

Well yes, but what is important is what is the nature and consequences of the decisions that are made from under those alternative perspectives.

    Mecum Vegas 2025

Stock pipes on the Kat for a start. That ups the price, as they are pretty much unobtainium.

    1981 GS650 E broken crankcase

I've used a set of unmatched cases before to build a GS engine, not considered ideal, due to the critical alignment of the cross-joint line boring of bearing journals. I had two sets of crash damaged 1100 cases with a good top and a good bottom case between them and thought 'what have I got to...

    Jet size differences

So the main jet is 5 sizes larger. Which is quite a bit richer, if the engine is stock with stock filter. This would be noticeable only at high rpm on a WFO throttle, say the last 2,000 - 2,500 rpm before redline. The twist grip controls the butterflies, but its volume of air passing underneath...

Compression test; held, now doesn't hold at all

    Jet size differences

By throttle/idle screw I'm assuming you mean the central knob that sets the resting stop for the throttle shaft (i.e. sets idle speed)? If so, the knob just sets the idle speed and doesn't really affect ease of starting. Properly jetted Mikunis don't start happily COLD without some use of the...

Compression test; held, now doesn't hold at all

OK.... sorry not 'running'. If you have compression (which you appear to have), its either fuel or ignition. So first step is diagnosis How long has it been sitting? I'm assuming it was a runner previously? Check that you have spark. Remove all 4 spark plugs so that the engine will spin freely...

Compression test; held, now doesn't hold at all

The purpose of running the engine in (I'm assuming new rings and a hone as the minimum work done) is to seat the rings so that they seal properly. An engine rebuild is like mixing a cake. Running it in is like baking the cake. It ain't finished until its out of the oven. So, I'm interested in...
