A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    '83 550: Leaking Fuel, Can't Idle

From the limited information you have provided it's the most likely explanation, but you won't know for sure until you have established an "known good baseline" with that bike. I've found your previous posts and saw that you're no stranger to work on bikes and on that one in particular, but I...

    '83 550: Leaking Fuel, Can't Idle

I'm going easy on you, since you're a Newbie. Quite a few things apply actually. In any case, you need to do maintenance on the carbs. I'm only here sporadically, and the Forum won't let me view your complete posting history. So, what's your wrenching experience? What do you know about the...

    Wiring Diagrams: 1981- 82 GS650 Fours

Crap, that reminds me that I really need to take a backup of Cliff's homepage... ping bwringer - possibly this part (650 wiring diagrams) of the library is broken? perhaps we'll fix this in your copy (and hence begin deviating from cliff's original) if so i'll begin mirroring your copy

    Wiring Diagrams: 1981- 82 GS650 Fours

I'm not sure if we have this already in Cliff's "Library" (see my sig), but if not, we should definitively add it.

    Won’t start after a wash

Well, last time I took a pressure washer to a bike of mine, one cylinder refused to fire until the engine got proper hot on the other cylinder (and sun) and dried off the water that got under the spark plug cap. Not sure what your exact situation is, but I'd expect water in the electrical...

78 GS750 engine overhaul on the Cheap!

My comment was intended to convey that you're being modest; you write "The proper fix would be... but that's for later" and then the photos show an engine that could've rolled off the factory floor a few days ago :) Like Nessism elaborated, these cases look damn fine. "Blasting" as in...

78 GS750 engine overhaul on the Cheap!

Ok, this is certainly interesting. Basically a "I know what I'm doing and I wanna see the minimum amount of work I can get away with to get this running again", right? Though...the engine did see some blasting, did it? No longer in the realm of minimum, then :D

Carb question for 1985 Suzuki GS 450 L

It's likely that the fuel in your carbs has dried out while parked. Fuel that dries out leaves a nasty residue, clogging the carbs, hence making the bike unwilling to run. Clean them, and next time you'll park the bike for a longer time, either put in some stabilizer and/or drain the carbs.

    Prepping tank for shipping

Microfiber cloth tends to catch debris/dirt/particles quite easily, you gotta make sure they're clean. Other than that, I'd use a healthy amount of bubblewrap?

The END is near (California guys)

See, that's progress already. ol' John Glassbottle can be seen swearing at his neighbor Joe Sixpack for using that newfangled, overly complicated 4 stroke thing; nobody ever needed more than two! ;-) Just recently I drove a transporter van that was fully electrified and thought "wtf - I like...

The END is near (California guys)

Existing ICE cars can be kept of course. I remember my grandfather using an electric lawn mower because he didn't want to deal with an ICE one - also it was heaps quieter. Though that was a small one to push, not to sit on. Hence, extension cord. No batteries (No Li-Ion back then, so batteries...

Cannot find air mixture screw anywhere

If you can get dimensions of a known good one, I'd expect this to be easily replicated on a hobbyist/tabletop-sized lathe?

    Ultrasonic Cleaner?

The usage of tap water does depend on your municipality/location. If the tap water is rather hard, it's advisable to put it through a filter first. For example in my case if I don't do it, I'll get calcium (chalk?lime?) deposits on certain alloys. In some locations you'll even need to use proper...

How do YOU jump start an old GS?

I usually jump start my old GS'es with the kickstart :) ...jokes' aside: 1. New Battery. 2. Get a "Smart" Charger that uses ΔV charging, and perhaps even has a trickle-charge phase. They're not cheap, but by now (a few years on the market) they're also no longer expensive. I can echo what has...

Hard to start when cold; vs hard to start when warm

Huh, as it happens I've got both a digital points replacement plate for the 550 on the shelf, could just as well use that when I get the chance to dig into the bike. The Guzzi has already been converted as such by a PO.

Hard to start when cold; vs hard to start when warm

Neither bike is new to me, as I had them both running very well up until recently, the 550 even with the bigger jets previously. The 550 is a '78. Guess i'll dig into the valves. I felt would be a bit early for the 550, but let's see...

GS550 doesn't like prolonged high speeds - fuel starvation or something else?

Hey all, thanks for the replies, I'll try answer your follow-up questions summarily: * While the bike currently is a bit hard to start, the issue existed for way longer, basically since I acquired and re-built it - and it started well then * When running, the bike runs well (but see next point)...

GS550 doesn't like prolonged high speeds - fuel starvation or something else?

As the subject says. My GS550 is capable of doing the ton (at least per the speedo) on certain roads (cough, cough), i.e. with some downhill stretches, but not for very long – after a while, I get a power/thrust loss. The first few times I encountered that, I rolled onto the shoulder, waited...

I was just about to suggest the dremel route as well, but I gotta say, the welding one I quite like too.
