A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    GS850G petcock options

Re: #1, from past experience on other bikes, if you do that you'll either lose the RES option or it will always be on RES. I'm hoping to kill the vacuum, but keep the RES and ON. We'll see if that's possible.

    GS850G petcock options

The "ON" position of my original petcock is leaking badly and I prefer the simpler non-vacuum style petcocks. 1. Can the existing petcock be rebuilt and converted to non-vacuum, maintaining the RES function? 2. If not, are there any bolt hole compatible options? I measure the c-c distance at...

Need to replace "weather stripping" on GS850 air filter

Doh! My stupid brain. I even used the term "weather stripping" in the post's title.

    Oddball GS1000 Carb - parts?

FYI - Consensus from the Honda/Keihin world is that you can disable air cut off vales and be OK. But as others have mentioned, that is an accelerator pump. Hard to say if you could live without that, assuming you can get the Honda carbs to otherwise work on your GS.

Need to replace "weather stripping" on GS850 air filter

here's the filter material I have on hand.. I could cut it to size. TBD if I should leave it a sheet or cut an opening equivalent to the metal rm of the filter holder.

Need to replace "weather stripping" on GS850 air filter

The rubber weather stripping on the air filter holder has gone missing, leaving a gap as shown in the first image. I know I shouldn't leave that gap open, so I have two options: 1. Use some spare filter material I have on hand and cut it to shape to fill that gap. Filling the gap would compress...

1980 Gs850GT seat fit other models

Yes, the seats seem to be swappable between the 1000G and 850G, at least for 1980's. I've done it.

    different sized LR carb boots

Anyone need a pair? They are now nice and supple

    different sized LR carb boots

UPDATE - I found two NOS boots still in the packaging on ebay. Not cheap but not outrageous either. We'll see how well the rubber has held up.

    different sized LR carb boots

Oddly, the L boost from my 850G are smaller than the R boots, even after multiple extended periods in wintergreen oil & alcohol. All four are now nice and supple, so the wintergreen oil did it's trick. I assume they're regained whatever size they will at this point. My only guess is that someone...

Looking for confirmation on likely source of fuel leak

I've taken apart dozens of carbs and haven't broken a post yet, so I'm not worried about that. At this point, I'll start a full tear down since putting each carb in my ultrasonic cleaner may unstick both the leaky valve seats and the stuck mixture screws. The engine is not yet ready for a test...

Looking for confirmation on likely source of fuel leak

You're right that I've been doing the quick & dirty carb update so far. The bike was previously only firing on 3 cylinders, then I corrected the valves clearances and would like to try a restart again before doing a full proper carb job. The carbs have some other issues, like frozen mixture...

Looking for confirmation on likely source of fuel leak

Sounds like a simple solution. Getting them out without damaging the valve holder ... not so simple.

Looking for confirmation on likely source of fuel leak

When doing a leak test on my carb bank, I'm getting a fuel leak from carb3 in the red area below. If I read the diagrams correctly, this port bring air to the main jet/emulsifier tube area that is closed off by the main needle. I assume this leak means the valve for that carb is not sealing...

To remove the cyl head or not? That is the question

UPDATE - After taking the exhaust camshaft off to swap exhaust shim on cyl2, it now has compression >120psi. Most of the valve clearances are now within spec, although E3 is still too loose (.15) and I3 right at .03. Swapping shims wouldn't really resolve it, so more shims on order to improve...

To remove the cyl head or not? That is the question

The oil was changed within the last few months, but the bike was sitting outside, sometimes uncovered. The engine was buttoned up, but the airbox was off. It doesn't look like that in the sight glass, so I'll investigate and probably get it out today, Rotella is cheap. Unfortunately, the notch...

To remove the cyl head or not? That is the question

Made some improvements in the valve clearances today, but they are still not great. The lower batch of numbers is current status. The 3Ex is too loose and 3In is on the tight side. The shim holder for 2Ex won't rotate, so I can't get the access notch in a useful position to even get the shim...

Excellent first step. Will let you know the result

To remove the cyl head or not? That is the question

Thanks all. I'll leave the cyl head on, but maybe take the camshafts off to make shim replacement and gasket cleaning easier.
