All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Gel battery

... and how many of you have a 9 yr old "maintenance free" battery? The serviceable battery in my truck is 8 or 9 yrs old. My point was/is: you can maintain a battery with caps. if you overheat a "maintenance free"; there's a good chance it is done. A "maintenance free" battery is convenient, a...

    Gel battery

Lithium batteries have a higher charge threshold. If you throw 13.3v at a lead acid battery it will eventually charge, a lithium battery needs a jolt of about 15v to start to charge, then you drop the voltage. If you use a regular lead acid charger it will never charge as it will never reach...

Maybe the most "cobbled-together" bike I have ever purchased!

You CAN... doesn't mean you should. The CV's require more air flow to work, so the CV (GSx) head has bigger ports... so putting VMs on a CV head would be an "upgrade", putting CVs on a GS head would be a "down grade" VM33s or CRs work great on a GSx head, but have to be "necked down" to 31mm for...

    Paul Brodie's Shop

One of the few motorcycle youtubers worth watching. After watching some of his vids, some of what he said about his past rang a bell. Before he got a name in bike frames, he drove a cab in Vancouver. I drove a cab in Vancouver. He lived in the 5500 block of Fraser. I lived in the 5700 block of...

    GS Rectifier/Regulator replace

Shunt describes the function of the regulator. It "shunts" excess power. Permanent magnet rotor alternators, like on most modern motorcycles, all have a shunt regulator. With a permanent magnet alternator the only thing regulating stator AC output is the RPM. The "usual" type regulator (like you...

    GS Rectifier/Regulator replace

Yamaha doesn't make that regulator, it's made by Shindengen and you'll find it on a whole bunch of motorcycles, atvs, industrial motors. It is the 'go to" part, and yes it is a MOSFET series device, with a shunt regulator. AFIK there are two Shindenegn part numbers for these, an early one and a...

    Degreed Cams

Do you mean to change the lobe spacing? If not, just use the OEM marks and don't touch the cams. Follow the manual. "degree ing" refers to the relationship of the lobes of the two cams to each other, NOT the relationship to the crank. you're doing cam TIMING, not degree ing. If the bike was...

Hot R/R along with complete power loss (GS450E -82)

Regulators that work with permanent magnet alternators, like on most motorcycles, are all "shunt" regulators. They "shunt" excess power to ground. The older types had the regulating circuit in parallel, the Shindengens have the regulating circuit in series. Less circuitry, less heat. The biggest...
