DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

what did you wrench on today??

A Range Rover. Well, a kids electric play car (Feber brand). Such a silly thing, but it makes my daughters giggle. They love it. It was a marketplace buy a couple years ago. Came as a slow 12V thing. One of the original motors gave out, so I upgraded to 18 V, which gave it a little more umph and...

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

I think the thin plastic is added to aid in putting the cover on. It helps the cover slip over the foam. Thicker plastic may help waterproof the foam, so long as it isn't ripped when installing the cover. Good idea!

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

I finally got my first ride in today. The weather was beautiful (low 70s), so I rode 50 miles on the backroads near my house. Not a lot of beautiful views, but a nice working landscape. Lots of farm fields, hay pastures, and patches of leafless woods. Also a few streams and rivers to see.

    Rust-o-ration or rust-o-mod - GS650GL

Looks like I said I finished this project a while back. But I didn't know then that I hadn't finished yet. I was going to say it's finished now, but I won't commit to that again. I love tinkering... As you can tell from some of the last photos, I did a few more updates and upgrades. Some of...

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

Darn it Salty_Monk. I can't unsee that. I have been trying to figure out how to "fix" the seat, or if it's so funny I need to keep it as is. Thanks ;)

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

Quite honestly, I haven't thought about water and the wet butt issue until Rob S. mentioned it earlier. I have read where other people have used seam sealer or silicone on the underside of the seat stitching to seal them up. This won't work for most seats that have a stitched pattern because...

    Rust-o-ration or rust-o-mod - GS650GL

I've been working on this project over the fall and winter. First, I removed the Pelican top case. Then I redid the paint. After a bit, I realized I didn't like the bronze paint the PO put on. It is now a Toyota blue paint. I also added a wind screen and changed to bar-end mirrors. I also put...

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

I finished it today. It was easier than I anticipated, but did take some time to get the details reasonable. I'm clearly not a professional, but it is much better than version 1. Here's the sewing machine I used. A $10 yard sale purchase 20 some years ago. Here are the last stitching...

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

Thank you all for the compliments. I appreciate those. I must say, the blurrier the images I upload, the better it looks. I made more progress last night, mostly sewing up the back of the seat. It didn't work out as I was hoping, but I think it will still look good. I initially wanted to...

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

I did nothing to version 1, and haven't seen examples of professionals doing anything either. I may have to look into this more. Wingsconsin - that is a beautiful seat.

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

Next step is to work on the seat cover. I watched a bunch of youtube videos on seat patterns and figured out how I would like this one to look. The key to this is that I am not creative, just stealing other people's ideas that I like. Started by laying out my design in paper. Gluing some...

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

After thinking about the design of the seat, I decided that I narrowed up the top too much. I really wanted the width of the top of the foam to be the same width as the last photo. So, I cut and added some more foam to the sides. This provided more support for the top piece of foam...

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

I have used a carving knife before on some truck seats. It worked well, but the saws and knives keep me from getting too hasty. Last time (version 1) was a hasty job and it looked like it. Thanks for the Firm confirmation.

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

The saws really helped me get a consistent cut across the foam. Then I started to refine the shape. I carefully added lines to make sure I was forming the new base as symmetrically as I could. Working slowly to make it flat. Although the front of the seat is swoops up very...

    Custom GL Seat - De-humping

The winter project that I started today was to modify (again) my GL seat. I have a GS650GL, and didn't like the original hump at all. I'm 6'4" and much prefer to sit roughly where the middle of the hump used to be. My first attempt worked, but was not pretty to look at. It did get me riding...

GS650L - grind rim's inner lip down to mount tire?

For what it's worth, I mounted that same tire on an '81 gs650gl rim this fall without any problems. Did the job myself, so I think that lends support to the bad tire theory. I did both front and back. I also fully understand any hesitancy about replacing it with the same, given one failure...
