A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    my very expensive gasket scraper

heh it worked okay. but man i had to scrub it for like 6 hours to get it clean. i don't think plated is a good idea. 999 fine silver is softer than aluminum but .925 sterling most likely isn't. sterling is significantly harder than fine silver. silverware will always be sterling. old US coinage...

    My 1982 GS 450 - journal thread

i rode about 100 miles for a test drive and everything seems to be working just fine. today i tackled the stator replacement, the last part to replace, and wow was that an awful job. it took me 6 hours to get the old crusty gasket off the side cover. i didn't feel very confident with the razor...

    my very expensive gasket scraper

i'm changing out my stator at the moment, and I would like to say up front, whoever invented these stupid black paper gaskets - i hope you have fun in hell. that said. I was looking around my garage for materials that i could scrape with that wouldn't mar up the aluminum stator cover. i found...

DIY Damping Rod Tool for my 79 GS850G

i just did my forks the other night. I rebuilt a set of forks from ebay. I had to drill out the damper rod bolts in those (which was easy, on mine a 3/8" is perfect) because they were overtorqued and super stuck. I took the bolts out of my bent up old forks without even taking the caps off...

DIY Damping Rod Tool for my 79 GS850G

i saw one guy who didn't even cut a taper in the broom stick. he just shoved the rounded end up against the damper rod and cut the handle off at just the right length so he could screw in the caps partially and it would lock everything up tight inside

    My 1982 GS 450 - journal thread

today is the bike's last day as a unicycle. i got the forks rebuilt today. that was the job i've been most intimidated by ever since i got the bike. in the end it was actually not very hard. the hardest part was getting the donor forks apart. I ended up having to drill out the damper rod...

Hanging Idle (I know, but bear with me) and different carbs

is this a 450? i'm gonna assert that the carbs are just not tuned well. you probably have the idle circuit too lean. if it's anything like mine - my idle screws had to be set at 5 turns out. i'd try turning yours out some more, maybe half a turn at a time, and go test. if this is the problem...

    My 1982 GS 450 - journal thread

well i went ahead and picked up another shinko 100/90-18, it's not exactly the same diameter but it's only about 5-10mm different. so hopefully the speedo won't be off too bad. the metric guy i met also told me that my carb issues are probably because i oiled the air filter wrong. apparently...

    My 1982 GS 450 - journal thread

well it turns out my ebay rim is an 18, not a 19, so i'll be shopping for a new tire. it came off an 86 automatic. i found a guy in town who works on metrics, it was really cool to meet an old timer in person who knows what he's talking about. he got my bearings swapped and said the rim looked...

    My 1982 GS 450 - journal thread

welp .. had to use the angle grinder on the axle but got it all apart. i'm bringing the new wheel to a shop to get trued up and what not. i'm gonna attempt to rebuild the forks myself. the old ones were on the way out anyway. i had to sand one of them down to stop a seal leak, and had to sand...
